Always wondered why Nobody Loved You was released as a single in Japan.

Anyone know?

No but they were touring national treasures.

Wasn't it released in Japan instead of "The Everlasting"? Still no idea why they did it like that.

hummingbird 15-11-2015 19:44

maybe Japanese radio chose to play it a lot?

Alongside Tolerate it's the most rock-out track on an otherwise rather delicate-sounding album. Presumably it was considered to be more marketable, particularly given that EMG - which TIMTTMY was being measured against - had the more anthemic, rousing songs.

Why only in Japan, though? Maybe it was just a Japanese radio favourite, as hummingbird suggests.

Because of "cherry blossom tree"?

I also found this: Billboard: NLY was in a Japanese commercial for a Sony Minidisc Walkman

Eh, still balls. The Japanese release is susceptible to the trade descriptions act seeing as half of it wasn't singles. And the UK one wasn't complete as it said on the cover either...

That's a point though, got me thinking about New Art Riot now too. Heavenly have been very cooperative, all 7 tracks Manics did with them has turned up on Sony stuff too. Suppose that'll be why there's been half a dozen pressings of New Art Riot, that Damaged Goods kept hold of it, didn't allow any of the tracks on Sony stuff until the box set. I wonder if Sony actually approached Damaged Goods before or couldn't be arsed, not like they struggled for b-sides in 92 and 93 but 94 was a bit thin on the ground.

I wonder too, if Yes were to be released Feb 95, if they had b-sides lined up or we'd have been looking at Judge Yr'self and a Faster remix or summat.

Same artwork, too.

Nobody 16-11-2015 13:50

I always thought it was just a decision by the Sony Japan. Maybe NLY was chosen as it was the heaviest track and would appeal to fans of the early albums. Though in general Japanese music fans always loved having exclusives such as Bonus Tracks. So maybe it was exclusive single.
Aside from this and Further Away, Japan has had quite a few other exclusive releases such as Know Your B-sides, Forever Delayed EP, Everything Live on DVD and the series of 2 disc re-issues. A lot of this occurs for other non-Japanese bands there as well I'm sure.

Nobody Loved You being in a commercial (first time I've heard about this) would probably be a good reason to release it as a single. A few years ago Everything Must Go was used in a beer commercial in Japan. After that it popped up on several compilation albums and was also a bonus track on the Japanese edition of Lipstick Traces.

I think the only other country that has had an exclusive single would Sleepflower in the US, though that was I think only a promo.

FD's Twitter has sadnessinhiseyes and a picture of the cover to one of the singles of TLORN.
What's that about?

It's a piss take of Kay Burley's twitter response to the Paris attacks I suspect.

First I heard of it too and it explains its release as a single there for me.

Like Nobody I always presumed NLY was selected as a single in Japan because it was heavier. I think it having been in an advert is a more logical explanation though.

I take it nobody told Paul McCartney about Motown Junk what James interviewed him the last month.

Lord Revan 19-11-2015 15:54

I'm curious if anyone that attended the Oslo concert in May last year has any pics to share? I was there and would love to see some more, I've only been able to find a few on a Norwegian site: http://gaffa.no/galleries/gallery/55288#/0

I remember seeing one where you could see the crowd and was able to find myself, I can't find it again now though...

Jayseph 25-11-2015 20:48

Nearly 20 years on, and that bit in the EMG book about JDB playing piano still intrigues me. Can anyone hear any piano on that album, because I can't?

Geranium Terrorists 25-11-2015 20:52

Possibly doubling the melody on No Surface...? Like they did live with Naysmyth.

Dancing Kirby 26-11-2015 13:24

At least one b-side features piano. First Republic.

That's the answer I remember from the last time this was brought up.

James played the piano on "You're Tender and You're Tired" I believe. Possibly "Happy Ending" B-side also.

AK47 02-12-2015 17:52

I'm currently wondering what on earth the manics will come back with in 2017 and whether or not I'll still care by then.

But Tender and Tired is on the album after Everything....

I am just saying that James has played piano on album tracks before. I thought that was obvious?

Geranium Terrorists 03-12-2015 17:26

Are the EMG photos at the top of FD really dark or am I imagining it?

Lord Revan 03-12-2015 22:07

They look normal to me.

Obvious, but slightly out of topic, as the question was about that album in particular. But it's okay. All fine. Peace. :X

Porco 07-12-2015 00:34

Zavvi.com has an offer on right now for their usual 'Manic Monday' where you can get £5 off an order of £50. The voucher code this time is MANIC5. So I just felt compelled to mention that here.

dark... mysterious... brooding... sombre... ;)

mrdavidj 07-12-2015 15:46

Today, I have mostly been trying to imagine ska-punk/reggae cover versions of Manics songs. Some work, some don't.

Geranium Terrorists 07-12-2015 16:36

That would be awesome! Someone should do it, please!

I believe also that Small Black Flowers was written by James on piano.

He wakes up, makes a Nespresso and gets into his hire-purchase car. Britpop the Ultimate Collection 2 CD album sits glistening on the passenger seat in the glow of the streetlights. He's on his way. Mondeo Man is awoken. It is time.

Son of Stopped 08-12-2015 21:37

"EMG Tour Cancelled!"
Misread a forum topic. But is it an omen?...

Dac X Lee 17-12-2015 23:00

Saw a random internet news headline - "Man Burns His Own Van Because He Was Bored".
My brain automatically pressed the play button - "tonight we watch the burning caaaars shining bright, was it boredom is not the skyyyyyy enough"♪

nozzer 19-12-2015 00:07

Really random question, but this picture has popped up on their wikipedia page, and is apparently from 2010, but i can't for the life of me figure out which gig. any idea's? i can't think of when in that period they had video screens in the background, or that brand of stage monitors.

Could it be from a festival? The stage looks huge.

AK47 21-12-2015 16:36

Bizarrely, I've not listened to the manics now for possibly 6 months - not a single song and the sad thing is it doesn't bother me as much as it should. Am I growing out of love? who knows.

I imagine you'll get back into them and wonder why it took so long.

Dac X Lee 04-01-2016 23:03

Manics ask: "So why so sad?"
The Drones respond: "It's sad, so fucking sad!"

sculptureofabloke 10-01-2016 10:39

Do people still collect? Bought a Rewind The Film one track promo yesterday, wasn't even sure it existed. Nice one.

Automatik 10-01-2016 18:13

Does anyone know if there's an easy way to do a mash-up? Very taken by the idea I mentioned on the Great Western thread of putting some of JDB's solo stuff and Nicky's solo stuff together to create 'lost Manics album', but I wouldn't know how to do it.

Suicide Aldi 10-01-2016 22:41

Itunes playlist?

Dac X Lee 10-01-2016 23:58

Haven't done any mash-ups myself, but having played around a bit with Adobe Audition, I can kinda imagine how it might be done, so I'd suggest this one.
But Audition is not for free, so maybe you'll prefer Audacity. Haven't explored it enough yet, but it's very popular and seems not so complicated either.
