So there are actually in practice four 'b-sides': Holding Patterns, Mirror Gaze, Concrete Fields and A Soundtrack To Complete Withdrawal, with the Bluer Skies Version of International Blue as a place filler.

Glyn 28-02-2018 22:09

So Holding Patterns didn't get renamed/shelved! Interesting to see how that turns out :)

What is the history of this song? I have some distant inkling of a memory of hearing about it from somewhere...

Jimi A 02-03-2018 13:03

What is the best way to get ahold of this as a non-Japanese speaker? How much do these versions cost?

Cheers!

Mentioned in this Simon Price article back in 2016 : http://thequietus.com/articles/20332...ew-simon-price

"James has played me one track that does sound great, which is called 'Holding Patterns', but other than that, this was meant to be our summer off"

Takk 03-03-2018 23:07

Looks to be about 33 pounds, and somewhere like cdjapan is usually a good bet. Japanese releases are expensive but usually lovely.

Flint 05-03-2018 09:16

Fingers crossed these getting a digital release or something in the west. The band's been good about supplying their Japanese bonus tracks to the rest of the world after Lifeblood, but given the complete lack of single packages this time I'm a little concerned.

Porco 05-03-2018 12:06

Yeah, I expect the bonus tracks will turn up on (legit) download sites before too long.

As I always point out when people start asking about importing, beware of getting hit by the extra VAT and handling fees if you are thinking of importing to the UK (and many other countries). Amazon.co.jp offer a pre-paid option that avoids nasty surprises later, though they don’t have the 2-disc RIF when I looked the other day (they are selling the standard 1-disc with bonus tracks). But that £33 from CD Japan could be more like £50 before you know it with the extra bits and pieces.

Yeah, I don't really get that shit. Alright, I understand that the government would rather us keep our money in the country although they're perfectly happy for themselves and business leaders to hide their money abroad... But yeah, if you can buy summat that's readily available here, that you can pay VAT on, it's understandable that the government would want to disuade people from buying the same thing from abroad. But this isn't readily available here and it won't be..

Just baffles me that's all, we've got Philip Hammond, Liam Frost and Boris Johnson giving it all this about how we're going to be swimming in post-Brexit trade deals, while essentially penalising customers in this way. Alright, this isn't even a drop in the ocean but I won't get me hopes up about any bigger deals.

Marat Sar 18-04-2018 14:40

Okay, so anyone hear these? What do you think? What are they like?

Anything would be nice... I hear there's a clip of Mirror Gaze up somewhere?

Dancing Kirby 18-04-2018 15:29

Both sound better than Broken Algorithms

Porco 20-04-2018 09:57

Oh wow, first listen of Mirror Gaze in full is awesome.

Now to try and decipher that chorus. lol.

Edit: Inlay should help! Edit2: Not so much!

I think the lyrics in the second booklet are so wrong 😄

FacelessSenseOfVoid 20-04-2018 10:17

Haven't heard the tracks in full yet, just from the samples but Holding Patterns is quite nice on first listen, reminds me of Melancholyme with the stop/start thing.

Mirror Gaze has a bit of JCEQT about it, really like it! Even from the extract it should have made the album alongside A Soundtrack To Complete Withdrawal.

They really are!

Although I do think they have some words that will help deciphering the actual lyrics. It's a fun bonus game!

I am borderline on A Soundtrack to Complete Withdrawl - I think it's worthy of being on the album but not at the expense of any other tracks... Maybe Holding Patterns too

But Mirror Gaze is just ... oh... Manics, what are you doing not putting that on the standard UK release??! Shaking my head!

Damn, if Mirror Gaze is THAT good then I can't wait to hear it! From the extract Holding Patterns sounded like a decent PFAYM/RTF era b-side but nothing more.

I shouldn't build it up, sorry. From the clip, the slow bit you hear after the intro is the weakest bit (which forms the verses) IMHO, sounds a bit b-sidey, but then it explodes back into the awesomeness of the intro music. Later on it has a quiet almost acoustic bit before the chorus returns again. It sounds weird to say you have basically heard most of it (musically) from the clip, minus the solo, but you kind of have. Edit: I guess the bridge to the chorus isn't in the clip either, which is also fantastic, sounds like it should be in Rocky or something :D

It does repeat some lyrics and I know that annoys some people, but still... really really good IMHO.

I'm sure some people will hate it still. lol.

You've really built it up now! Anything that sounds like it should be in Rocky gets a thumbs up from me.

Porco 20-04-2018 11:13

Put the lyrics up for Mirror Gaze in the RIF Lyrics thread...

Highlights:

"I got the monkey sitting on my neck"

Chorus:
"Beyond all this
Oblivion runs
Beyond all this
There lies a place for us
Beyond my eyes
There is a mirror gaze"

And I thought "Can I tie your blindfold?" from A Soundtrack to Complete Withdrawal was a bad line!

Miller Gays???

I like the samples :)

Porco 20-04-2018 17:38

I wonder if Japanese translations of English are as frequently funny for the Japanese as theirs are for us? I hope so.

Marat Sar 21-04-2018 08:31

How is the mix and master quality on Mirror Gaze? Is it a full quality album track like Soundstrack To Complete Withdrawal, or a b-sidey thing like Whatever Happened To The Blue Generation? Can't tell from the clip...

I hope it's full quality because the verse melody and beginning sample are so strong. I really want to replace In Eternity and Broken Algorithms with Soundtrack and Mirror. That would make RIF a real contender... but b-side mixing and masters, for me, mess up the tracklist if audio quality dips.

beadyeyedoeen 21-04-2018 09:15

Is it okay to put these tracks on YouTube? I've put a few vinyl only tracks on and they've not been taken down, but JDB Lost Again said it can't be played or something

Marat Sar 21-04-2018 11:05

Put em up, put em up!!!

(I have no idea if they'll be taken down, probably, eventually, but I really need to hear those bad boys...

I'm gonna get banned ain't I? :D What's the sitch with youtube anyway. Most of the stuff there is some sort of grey area... loads of b-sides and rarities though...)

In terms of production specifically I'd say it sits comfortably between the unfinished feel of the demos and the polished nature of the more produced finished album tracks.

Sounds really great to me. Does this help at all? (waveform of my ALAC rip from the CD).

https://s1.gifyu.com/images/MGsrcsht800px.jpg

You can see the general shape... the quieter verses, it's not brickwalled. It sounds huge to me, but it's not overly complicated - a bit of proggy organ in places but mostly just (lovely) electric guitar and some acoustic bits, and some big layered vocals in the chorus. Generous echo/reverb.

If you like the clip, then yeah, it's that, without the compression mush and then some lovely layered/harmonised vocals in the chorus.

I can't imagine it's "ok" in a legal sense at all, so couldn't recommend it, but people do seem to get away putting up all sorts, it's weird.

What do you think of the tracks? I'd love to see someone else's opinion of Mirror Gaze especially! I am going mad or is it really as amazing as I think it is? :D

I'm conscious of making too much of it and people deciding to spend the (ludicrous amount of) money to import it then be all like 'oh Porco you made me waste my money you utter... '!

Marat Sar 21-04-2018 17:40

Sounds great but also sounds like it would stick out in this glossy tracklist if there's an unfinished quality to it.

In other words, probably a great experience but won't join the traclist instead of Broken Algorithms to take RIF up from a 7 point album to an 8 pointer...

I don't know, I don't think it sticks out, I think it sound in keeping with the album. It's all a pointless discussion I guess really lol, you'd have to have the track to put it in a list, and then you could decide yourself in that instance.

Both lovely tracks, love the verses in mirror gaze, I hadn't heard holding patterns as I didn't get the single, so that was new to me aswell, I wasn't gonna buy the CD, but I couldn't wait, wish they'd let us know if they was gonna be released digitally here like with Futurology, bought that Japan version, then they was B-Sides to the single, was quite annoyed 😄

beadyeyedoeen 21-04-2018 19:00

hah, you just lopped off the first [quote] tag. :)

I know what you mean about the tracks being released later... but I still think it's nice to have them all together. I do still hope they get a wider release soon for everyone else's sake.

Europa Gluten Free 21-04-2018 19:37

If anyone wanted to pm me to discuss the Japanese tracks, I'd very much appreciate it...
