I live in Camden and earlier today I saw someone walking through town wearing a RIF shirt which surprised me...obviously lots of band shirts around here but I've never seen a Manics one before!

The FD twitter has already shared this (thanks FD!) but here's my blog post about the Nynex gig, 21 years ago yesterday, for anyone interested :)

NOFX make a remark (It's been reported as a "Joke" but nah, it's not a joke joke) about last year's Vegas gunman and shit hits the fan! Sponsors pull out. Complaints on Twitter etc
http://www.nme.com/news/music/nofx-l...ooting-2329336 So if Twitter was around in 1992, Manics wouldn't have been able to record anything afterwards after the Stipe remark! "Ugh! I can't do what I've paid musicians to do but they've made a remark on stage and now it's ru-ined!! Ru-ined!!" This is why people can't believe certain songs are decades old. Social media is keeping people in an arrested development. Or is it a certain generation? I don't take offence at anything these days. Unless taking offence at people taking offence at things they shouldn't be taking offence over things they should be taking offence over counts. |
That Stipe thing would've indeed finished their careers these days
What a shitty thing to say. |
It was bad at the time and I think some still hold it against them as a band.
Noel G helped a couple of years later by wishing AIDS on Damon Albarn but there was an added sense of homophobia (intended or otherwise) to what Nicky said. But hey, they’re now touring with the band that released One in a Million before shortly going on to become one of the biggest acts of all time. |
Has any band's career been finished by anything they've said?
Surely Morrissey is proof you can be a grade A dick and not fear any consequences for anything you say. |
Has Nicky met Stipe? Could well have been times when they could've crossed paths on festival bills or at awards ceremonies etc...
I agree with Routine Builder, as shit as it was I don't think the Stipe remark would be career ending today, but think there'd be a much bigger backlash today than there could've been without social media at the time. Before people move on to something else to be outraged about. |
I’m sure this isn’t quite the front cover Q wanted...
https://sites.create-cdn.net/siteima...05/240x316.jpg Morrissey has done his career a lot of damage over recent years with regards to the media and radio play. It won’t stop him saying something else offensive in the near future though. |
Hasn't Nicky apologised for that comment? I think the world needs to move on

Besides that, it wasn't an offense offense. He just wished Stype to be like Mercury, a.k.a. a great singer and an iconic artist who made a well deserved glorious entrance into music history. It's the audiences the guilty ones for knowing a great artist by something that has little to do with his career. It's a bit like nowadays, just mention the colours black and white, and you'll be accused of racism. Tough times for painters.... |
Saw this on the back of the bus in front of mine...

The Anchoress has now followed and unfollowed me on Instagram 3 times... I suspect because I liked some Manics posts, and she's gone through Manics' likes trying to get some followers for herself. Either way... stop it!
