Lost Singles
No this isn't for any dating forums! What 10 songs do you think would have been a great single but were cruelly ignored? Mine in no particular order:
1. 1985 2. 4Ever Delayed 3. Golden Platitudes 4. Send Away The Tigers 5. Prologue To History 6. Enola/Alone 7. This Is Yesterday 8. Intravenous Agnostic 9. Solitude Sometimes Is 10. Marlon JD P.S. I realise that this would have been a better thread around the release of National Treasures :) |
Great idea for a thread (and later a playlist)
I haven't read all of your list so I am not influenced...!!! But I'm sure it might turn out to be similar. 1985 4ever Delayed Intravenous Agnostic Prologue to History Second Great Depression Ready for Drowning Mr. Carbohydrate Emigre Still a Long Way to Go Cardiff Afterlife |

This Is Yesterday
Enola/Alone No Surface All Feeling Ready For Drowning Black Dog On My Shoulder 1985 A Song For Departure The Second Great Depression Prologue to History 4 Ever Delayed |
I won't repeat those already said, but always thought Sorrow 16 had potential as a single
|
Glasnost
Black Square Misguided Missile |
1985 is always mentioned as the single that should have been, but I'm not completely convinced. It ain't got a catchy chorus (then again, neither does Empty Souls). Maybe it could have worked but I can see why they passed on it.

I think in some cases the singles they did release are the best songs of that album / period. The ones that I would maybe substitute would be:
GT - Born to End for Love's Sweet Exile GATS - No changes THB - This is Yesterday for Revol EMG - No Surface All Feeling for Kevin Carter or Australia TIMTTMY - No Changes KYE - Freedom of Speech Won't Feed My Children for So Why So Sad Lifeblood - 1985 for The Love of Richard Nixon SATT - Send Away the Tigers for Autumnsong JFPL - Peeled Apples, Jackie Collins PFAYM - Golden Platitudes for Postcards From a Young Man RTF - 30 Year War for Anthem For a Lost Cause F - Europa Geht Durch Mich for Futurology (was Europa released as a single?) RIF - In Eternity For Liverpool Revisited Other songs I think would have been good singles: Sepia Prologue to History Door to the River Judge Yr'self Forever Delayed Red Rubber Empty Motorcade |
Nice thread.
I think I’ve got 10 singles that I reckon could have worked as additional releases, along with with some swaps for songs I think might have done a job as a single. GT: Methadone Pretty for Love’s Sweet Exile. GATS: Sleepflower could have been the 4th single THB: This is Yesterday could have been the 4th single EMG: The Girl Who Wanted to be God could have been a 5th single such was their rise to success TIMT: Prologue to History Montana/Autumn/78 could have been a double A-side, and either included on the album or released around the same time as a stand alone single. KYE: Baby Elian instead of Ocean Spray. FD: Foreverdelayed could have been a stand alone single. LB: 1985 could have been the 4th single, A Song for Departure replaces Empty Souls and To Repel Ghosts replaces The Love of Richard Nixon. SATT: Send Away the Tigers could have been the 4th single JFPL: Peeled Apples and Marlon JD released as proper singles. Futurology: Let’s Go To War as a 3rd single RIF: Sequels of Forgotten Wars instead of Dylan & Caitlin, In Eternity instead of Liverpool Revisited. |
Too many to choose from, lots of fine choices already I agree with.
I’ll just add Mirror Gaze because Mirror Gaze. |
Of the songs mentioned I think Second Great Depression would have actually done well. And Another Invented Disease, musically -- if it didn't have that weird name referencing AIDS in a 'puzzling' manner.
Nothing would've saved Lifeblood commercially, at that time, but 1985, yes -- would've done way better than TLORN. If anything TLORN shoulda been a famous "lost single". 30 Year War would have been a much, much better choice for 3rd single off RTF. Some albums where the singles have been very very well selected, almost perfectly: Resistance is Futile, This Is My Truth, Know Your Enemy (yes, though people here don't believe it), and GATS where they really did all they could with that material. |
always thought Dead Martyrs would've made a decent final single from KYE, paired with a Slash n Burn / Judge Yr'self style concert footage montage vid.

Since SATT, I've resented the single choices ( as made by the band or record company or both). They essentially want to seesay "Look this band is still making songs like EMG and DFL, and you liked those didn't you!" rather than opting for songs that might widen the band's fan base. If you never listen to the albums, you'd just assume that the band are putting out the same record time and time again. I don't believe they do, but when you see singles like "It's not war", "International Blue" and "Indian Summer", I'd forgive someone for not giving the band the benefit of the doubt. I wish the third single would be reserved for some of the more heavy or experimental tracks which showcase either the band's creative edge or musicianship rather than repeating the same message with diminishing returns.

"It's not War" is probably their worst ever single, never mind it being the lead single! Another DFL rehash. They really did miss a big song for PFAYM. But even a fantastic lead single wouldn't have saved it. Their worst ever album surely?
|
Wasn't Patrick Bateman supposed to be both on the album AND a single?
This may be a false memory, but I'm sure I read this somewhere (Simon Price's "Everything", think). |
Yup, first track debuted during the ass end of the GT tour (same night as the Freddie Mercury rant). It may have been planned as a standalone single but not sure.

Agree with the rest of your post. The follow up singles have been lesser compared to the deep cuts untouched. |
This thread reminded me that I made some single covers back when JFPL came out, so I thought that I’d share them with you all again:

Those are still great covers Richey. The Stephen Hawking one seems extra-poignant now...
|
Cheers buddy. Always thought those 4 songs would’ve been perfect singles.

But I understand why they didn't do the full commercial onslaught, I think it was classier that way, even if a tad frustrating for fans in some ways. |
Yes is the big one for me
1985 would have been great too. 30 Year war could have been a cool political statement. |
I may be in a minority but I really like Broken Algorithms, I think it could have worked as a single and added a bit of variety to the RIF singles run.
Much as I love the big anthemic tunes like International Blue and Indian Summer, I'd love it if they came back with a lead single like Found That Soul or Faster next time. I don't know if they ever will go in that direction again, but I'm definitely in the mood for a rougher edged Manics next time. |
