And as if by magic, I got a 'shipped' email on my set from the official store... :)

Whole thing on Spotify if you position your profile east, or wait until midnight

Not sure why we bother buying stuff now

I love this remaster. The boost in the high mids makes the swelling guitars, the ambient keys, the strings, the oohs and the ahhs -- in short, the tristesse -- much more grand.
The melancholy's gone widescreen now (the original release suddenly sounds cramped, almost boxed-in).

Despite this larger soundscape, the album still packs a punch, perhaps even more so than the '98 release. The feel is somewhat more desolate now -- there is now a vastness to the sound that strengthens the sense of isolation.

The restructuring at the end of the record (tacking Nobody Loved You on as the last track and putting Prologue to History in the former's original place) is revisionism, sure, put it actually sort-of makes sense artistically.
There is more of a "narrative arc" to the album now; it has a more bombastic sonic closure whereas the original more-or-less drizzled out. IMHO.

That's it up on Spotify now - https://open.spotify.com/album/4VzCL...TOGBPBYH0lb9dA

Is this the Tsunami they have hyped as a very different version all the years?
Of course it’s a bit more rough, but... Yeah maybe it is.

I truly love the remaster of the album too!
Such an improvement. Didn’t expect that.

Mr Richey 07-12-2018 08:13

I’m listening to it on my way into work. They’ve done a good job with it, really expanded the sound so everything has room to breathe but the overall mix sounds a bit quiet. Might just be my hearing or it might be that we’ve just become used to “remasters” having everything cranked up to 11.

Can we rename Disc 2 the "Nick Nasmyth" mix? I was hoping for a bit more from the demos, perhaps they'll grow on me.

Routine Builder 07-12-2018 08:37

oooh, that drumming on the Been Natural demo!

Routine Builder 07-12-2018 08:41

My impression from the demos is that the album didn't really come together until Mike Hedges came along. This album could have easily have ended up sounding like a poor man's EMG (e.g. the YSTSFMH demo sounds like a sequel to Australia).

Even more in love with Be Natural after that demo version.
And who knew Prologue pre-dates the advent of the Dyson?!

tiger 07-12-2018 08:49

SYMM lost a lot of its punch between demo version and final version. Earlier version sounds like a much stronger closer for the album than what we got.

Mr Richey 07-12-2018 08:52

Now I love “Prologue..” and I’ve always thought it’s a great song but it doesn’t fit comfortably with the other material on the album. That’s why it was a b-side in the first place.

Routine Builder 07-12-2018 08:53

"creepy, creepy......dusty?"

Classic!

Mr Richey 07-12-2018 08:59

“Nobody loved you like meeeeeeee!” is still one of JDB’s most emotionally powerful vocal deliveries.
