I share the scepticism that this film specifically won't get any other kind of release, but I find the notion that it's impossible anyone could ever make a film without a wide release being planned a little odd.
Films do get made by filmmakers that never get released. Just like paintings, music, literature... we experience what gets released, we don't experience what isn't, and sometimes things only get extremely limited releases, for a wide variety of reasons (legal, financial, artistic or otherwise). Making money and making an artistic statement to as many people as possible are reasons to make a film, but they're not the only reasons.
