To See A Friend In Tears, Best Version?
Not strictly a JDB solo question, although being a manics forum, most are going to side with him on which version is best... so whose version is best?
Jacques Brel's Original: http://youtu.be/z_JJRN_GFd4 Momus: http://youtu.be/3OfCBSX3jZc James!! http://youtu.be/WgkauxjxD-w I think we can all agree it's a great song, and I'm not usually a fan of covers, but the Momus version sneaks it for me What about you? |

James's version makes the song soar. The other two are too quiet

for me, the Brel version feels like a different song to the more recent covers. I do adore Momus though, so I'm kind of torn.

James' version for me!

Momus. One of my all-time favourite tracks.
Just find James's voice too earnest and passionate and Springsteeny for the lyric, not something I've ever said before but I'd have preferred to hear Nicky singing or 'singing' it. Also I don't like the little pc tweaks of the lyrics. Just listened to the original for the first time, like the arrangement, although I'm afraid the lyrics are an insuperable barrier (although I got an A1 in French in my Leaving Cert).

I can't find a reference (shame) if music by Brel is from the Louis Malle movie
"Le feu follet" 1963 ('The fire within')? If so, plot summary: " The film stars Maurice Ronet as Alain Leroy, a recovering alcoholic at a rehabilitation clinic in Versailles who has depression. He decides to end his life, but first decides to visit his friends in Paris one last time, in an attempt at finding a reason to continue living... " I have to see this movie... |

I was humming this on the way into work actually.
I like both Jacques Brel's version and James'- both are different and give gravitas to the words in different ways.

James wimped out of using some of the more non-PC words in his version which means that it doesn't rhyme properly.
