Whilst I agree on its quality, I still think it works that they left it off Truth, as it wouldn't really have fitted in with the rest of the tracks. The instrumentation is too different and the whole thing feels a lot more energetic than a lot of songs on Truth (which don't hit you with as much instant force).

It would be interesting to debate whether, if they had released it as a single instead of Tolerate (which was originally planned as a b-side), it would have got to Number 1. I reckon it inevitably would have, considering the musical climate of the time and the Manics' popularity.

Should've been a non-album single.

Sounds a bit more like an EMG song in ways - I wonder if it was written closer to the end of the EMG sessions?

There's footage of James playing it in a rehearsal on the EMG DVD. Although that may be a bit later (the 1997 tour, it looks like)

Drums and piano that's so fucking cool. Especially drums, like in Montana/Autumn/78. Haven't listened to these tracks for ages though.

Yes. Please.
But I don't think it would have fitted with the rest of TIMTTMY.

There's more chance of Sean singing than them ever playing it live again, I sadly reckon. If they were to play a b-side though, I agree Prologue would definitely be the most likely.

It is one of the best songs they've ever done. It would have been a great single.

They should have saved it over and released it as a none album single instead of Masses, then put masses on know your enemy.

I love it, but I like that it was a b-side to Tolerate, it made for a fantastic single with those b-sides.

I'm not sure I agree about them not releasing one of their two number one singles (!) but Masses absolutely should have been on KYE IMHO, I still believe it would have given them a massive sales boost. And it's not like KYE is their most coherently conceptual album stylistically, the opposite is almost the point… #missedopportunity

Of course it was on the Japanese version...
