It's certainly in my top 3, musically it's the closest to what I've always wanted to hear from them bar a few songs. I admit it is a bit long and listen to it now on a playlist minus Robeson, Purification, Baby Elian, Epicentre and Convalescent with Just A Kid from the Japanese edition on the end.

It's my favourite of the omitted tracks but still not keen on it. Bit too standard rock for me.

Love the fact it sounds so sinister, definitely one that would've sat comfortably next to TIHOE on THB.

Being a sad individual with no life I have recently taken to trying to work out the perfect 'KYE' tracklisting.
This is my most recent attempt; Found That Soul Intravenous Agnostic Locust Valley Ocean Spray Freedom Of Speech Won't Feed My Children The Year Of Purification The Convalescent So Why So Sad Dead Martyrs His Last Painting My Guernica Royal Correspondent Epicentre Ballad of the Bangkok Novotel Midnight Sun Let Robeson Sing I admit that I cheat slightly ('Midnight Sun' although hailing from that era was, I suspect, recorded later, maybe with the 'Robeson' b-sides like 'Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel?' but is so good it has to be included) and I'm still not quite sure about the placement of 'Ballad' and 'Epicentre' but I think that version avoids the one fault I have with the album - the sudden shift from the first three rockier songs to a series of acoustic tracks that makes the whole thing feel disjointed. I'd originally left 'Purification' off but found myself wanting to load up the second half of the album and needed it to balance things out. It pains me to miss 'Miss Europa Disco Dancer' off the track-listing because I like it and it adds to the variety, but I'm not sure I can squeeze it on. Hmm. Incidentally, 'Robeson' is a real favourite of mine (but then I love gospel) so I wanted it either at the mid-point for the album to hang off, or as the closing track. But once I moved 'So Why So Sad' into the middle the give the album a sudden lift, 'Robeson' could be shifted to the end with 'Midnight Sun' providing a great outro - 'Sing it loud/Sing it proud/I will be heard/I will be found'. |
