I spose you just end up playing what you feel comfy with. I do like the 0.71's! The one I use on the mandolin is like a piece of paper!
I used to use a green one - I can't remember what thickness it was. I got it from a Heavy Stereo gig...! *googles* looks like it was a 0.88mm. |

I buy my dunlops in packs of 72! Get through approx a bag a year (they follow me everywhere). About £13 on the net from eBay US sellers.

Yeah I was going to say, they're 50p each where I get my guitar stuff from!
Might get me a 1mm tomorrow - I just had a noodle with the 1.14mm and I could definitely feel the difference. Weird, really, less than a millimetre making all that difference! (oooh matron) |

The way I see it, with anything that bends (even a 1mm) you spend a proportion of your own energy in flexing the pick before the string is plucked. With a very hard pick, all your energy is transmitted to the string. As well as this using less wrist energy, you can play faster as the string is picked straight away rather than bending the pick first.

I got some 1mm's yesterday but I think they're a bit too bendy. Maybe I'll use the .71 for strumming and 1.14 when I'm doing lead. |

I can also confirm the 1mm Dunlops. I use the same, except I use the max grip range as I'm forever dropping them in the heat of a gig. They also double up for playing bass.
