Can I nominate Nicky's Zeitgeist (that should've been the actual title)? A lot of fans slag it off but I think the lack of smoothness does the lyrics a favour. When James sings a crap lyric, his voice is so fantastic that you don't notice, but Nicky's voice makes you pay attention. He's not THAT bad a singer, either, and has a lot of soul in his voice (even if he's no James). He'll never win the X Factor but giving Nicky rein to sing gives some kind of authenticity to their largely cosmetic "punk" sensibilities.
Journal for Plague Lovers seems underrated by the band if not the fans so I've voted for it. Other members have said it too, if they'd made a bigger deal of it publicity wise it could've been one of their biggest albums. There's the passion and fire of a young band with the grounded logic (well, two of them) of an established act. Fashionable post punk influences but not in the manner of pouting fashionistas. Of course, having the name production of Steve Albini doesn't hurt either. Neither does the fact it's a great album. Richey's lyrics may be there but it's no darker musically than This Is My Truth, and certainly not lyrically. This Is My Truth is to me Nicky's Holy Bible, some of his best lyrics, with some of his most uplifting alongside some of his darkest. In my opinion, My Little Empire is one of the darkest things they've done, there's just no hope in it and most of Richey's had some kind of hope or striving to do something , no matter how damaging that something ultimately is. Actually, while it sold bucketloads, there's a case for This Is My Truth being their most underrated album artistically. Last edited by Blixa; 21-07-2011 at 22:37. Reason: fix some errors |
