Manics Pride / Manics Pet Hate
So in this one we put the one thing about the Manics that we are most proud about alongside our Manics pet hate.
I'll start: Producing an album as magnificent as The Holy Bible / Jimbo playing less and less guitar live these days |

proud of: The Holy Bible, the aesthetic sense of the early years (including design work, image, photoshoots, the photographers/videographers they worked with, etc)
not so proud of: most of the time Nicky speaks, tbh

Proud of: the lyrics when they're great
Not so proud of: the lyrics when they're shit |

Proud - That whole period from GT to THB was for me one of the most amazing and influential times of my life. It was like being part of some kind of secret society- though in reality, I was a complete outsider. I loved the threats to make one album and split up, the baiting of the press, the anger, the energy..etc- THAT, was rock n roll!
Not so proud - Umbrella......I still don't understand why they would cover that song.

Similar to Counterlanguage, proud of the fact they are still around making great music.
Pet Hate - Nicky singing (Cos no one is forcing you to buy that boxset! )

Pros: the good albums and songs
The fact James still seems to enjoy it and wants to play guitar Cons: the good stuff they ignore, based on sales figures (I can't say I wouldn't be similarly affected if I was in their position, though) The fans are sometimes hard to get on with...

Pros - When they sounded and looked unlike anything else at the time
Cons - Overdoing the strings a lot |

Quote:
Pros - That they're still around Cons - Coming out with albums that they think they have to make, instead of doing what feels natural. Also, rubbish sets that almost completely ignore their best work. |

Pride: Taking musical forms I usually have no interest in (stadium rock, hair metal, soft rock, etc) and filling them with so much erudition, passion, provocation, political and historical engagement and excitement that I actually understand how they can be great.
(In this way, the whole of the Manics back catalogue becomes part of their greatness, even when their ambition completely exceeds what they can pull off, or when the basic idea is just terrible. I can't think of another band whose actual effort is so much fun to watch, who are always striving so hard to do something dramatic and entertaining. I can fully understand why some people wish Nicky would stop making incredibly silly and reactionary statements in interviews, for example. I don't. I view all their regrettable statements, their questionable fashion choices, occasional musical self-indulgence, barking mad slogans, awkward interviews on bizarrely selected TV shows, flirtations with the middle of the road and drunken solo performances at Latitude as being part of the same quest to not be boring in any department whatsoever. If the next album had heartbreakingly brilliant music coupled with sensible interviews and understated clothes, I would feel like something had died) Pet Hate: Not being more adventurous with their setlists. I want them to be like late-period REM, when they could play something from Chronic Town then go straight to Accelerate. Because there's no point having a great back catalogue if you're not going to use it. Last edited by Parma Violets; 03-11-2011 at 21:59. Reason: Refining manifesto |
