They wanted to look cool. My favourite uniform is James's in the Faster video and I think it's the same he is wearing on this performance from Naked City:

James is definitely an old Labourite. Nicky is pragmatically, but I think he's very, very sympathetic towards communism (different from Stalinism). I always imagined Richey as being a commie, with some right flourishes like the death sentence.
Sean probably just wants to be a totalitarian dictator.
