I always mishear "If God made man they say/Sam Colt made him equal" as "If God made man the same", which makes more sense to me than "they say" (i.e. God made all humans the same as each other, weapons make them equal to each other).
And "they say" would indicate that 'they' said: "If God made man, Sam Colt made him equal", which makes even less sense. I get the general message of the lyric, but the way it's phrased is very odd.
