I find it rather funny you can write that about someone else considering some of the things you've said in this thread, and the tone in which you've said them.

i think they've done a great tribute to him with this work, as the songs did have to be edited in one way or another.
Yeah, agree. I disagree with Chinaboatman about tunes or whatever being lifted from from other songs. Yes they're very similar but to me they don't sound exactly the same.

They're not denying that though, in terms of the music anyway. James has made much of the fact that he wanted to work on the songs as little as possible, not in terms of being lazy, but to keep them fresh. That's probably the reason people liken JPFL to alot of b-sides from different era's, it's the lack of polishing which is JPFL's greatest strength.

I don't know about with Richey, but I remember Nicky saying that if James doesn't want to use one of his lyrics, he just won't.

Quite right too. He has to sing them after all!

I only realised the other day, after the old sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart started on some Sky channel or other, that a few of the lines from Williams Last Words were taken from that old wartime song.

Goodnight sweetheart, all my prayers are for you
Goodnight sweetheart, I'll be watching o'er you
Tears and parting may make us forlorn
But with the dawn a new day is born
So I'll say goodnight sweetheart, sleep will banish sorrow
Goodnight Sweetheart, when we meet tomorrow
Dreams enfold you, in them, dear, I'll hold you
Goodnight sweetheart goodnight.

Goodnight sweetheart, all my prayers are for you
Goodnight sweetheart, I'll be watching o'er you
Tears and parting may make us forlorn
But with the dawn a new day is born
So I'll say goodnight sweetheart, sleep will banish sorrow
Goodnight sweetheart, when we meet tomorrow
Dreams enfold you, in them, dear, I'll hold you
Goodnight sweetheart goodnight.

Though of course in Richey's version dreams leave and die rather than enfold you.

That's an interesting find, thanks for pointing it out!

Journal for Plague Lovers is the best example, it seems like only a fraction ended up on the song and by reading the real lyrics you get a completely different feel, something along the lines of archives of pain 2: the bludgening. The lyrics aren't anymore unmelodious than anything on the holy bible so I don't understand why they made a concious effort to dilute them especially when they weren't even planning to push the album 'commercially' (despite the mass amount of radio/tv interviews).

I still think JPFL is a great album but the editing has me feeling conflicted, it's as if they are richey's lyrics the way Wire thought he should of wrote them...
Wire turned William's Last Word's into a love song for himself. He friggin' wishes!

Just re-read the whole thread. The band must be quietly terrified after every new release
