Watched it again - I really enjoyed it but I think the ideal way to see it would be to have no prior knowledge of the band whatsoever, like the Anvil film for a lot of people.

My copy of “No Manifesto” arrived sometime ago. I wanted to wait to watch it. Since we’ve been waiting so long for it another couple of weeks wouldn’t do any harm. So on Good Friday evening, home alone and with a nice newly opened bottle of Connemara Irish whiskey I watched “No Manifesto”.
I enjoyed it. I found it likeable and well produced. I especially liked the footage recorded in Faster studios. Although that filming is now 10 years old, what happens in the studio must still be the same There’s nothing glamorous in hanging around the studio day after day. Most of the time it looks quite boring. The boredom broken by games of darts and the rehearsing of a newly completed song. I’m sure that 10 years on and a further three albums released nothing much would have changed there. However as much as I found “No Manifesto” enjoyable I felt as if I didn’t learn anything new about the band. Perhaps because so much time has passed since the recording of the doco anything contained in it has made its way into the fan domain in other channels. It was nice seeing Nicky’s garden and study, yet I would have liked to have learnt more about the writing process of Nicky. That wasn’t touched on. There was lots of heavy editing going on. This is particularly noticeable when the band talk about the beginnings of the band. It was filmed over so many encounters it gets a bit annoying as you see Nicky wearing different clothes all the time and it being filmed in so many locations. It’s the bits we don’t get so see from those interviews that makes me wonder if that’s the bit I want to know about. It was good trying to get the band members alone as much as possible. Not easy to do. Each somewhat guarded when alone and not overly comfortable talking without the others there. I found the extended interview with Rush tedious to say the least. It really meant nothing to me and it’s hard to be enthused for others enthusiasm . James’ holds the doco together. Without his willingness there would have been “No Manifesto”. The disagreement between Sean and Nicky is laughable and a nice candid look at what they talk about. I would have liked to see some on screen titles to name the fans. So over all enjoyable. Something to pull out perhaps once a year to watch.

I always love the way the camera (And I saw the only shot of James putting his hand to move it out of the way, that must have been Rule #1 Elizabeth wasn't informed!) follows them off the stage and they walk down to the dressing room, eat some sandwiches and pack up their bags and put on coats and go to the bus!
I've always wondered what that looked like. Thanks to "No Manifesto" we now know! |

I finally wached it friday aswell and I absolutly loved it. A brilliant job well done. My favorite bits were:
The footage of their first gig Seans gun collection Rehursing imperial bodybags and James considering adding a horn section to it!! The montage of Nickys rants I also found it interesting that Nicky said there was some really beautiful songs on lifeblood. And that TLORN started off sounding like an REM track! I would love to hear that version someday. |

Forgot to add. It liked seeing the clips of Richey when he was in good health. Wear the Bomb the past t-shirt and he had all this bangles on. He looked great and sounded cool as fuck. Then we saw that clip of him with his hair dyed ginger, looking gaunt and a shell of his former self. I've seen this photo of him 100s of times but to see it in a moving image and in good quality was moving. I've always wanted to know what is on Richey's skin on his face in that photo? Is it make-up, a skin disorder or what I always think, dirt. It's been bugging me for 20 plus years!
Back to the doco, after the gig when they take the piss out of some poor girl who was dancing weirdly. I guess they much watch the audience as much as we watch them and they would have seen some right strange sights. And as for eating sandwiches after the gig, more like James scoffing them!

Please could someone explain the story about Underdogs? I missed it.

The Underdogs story? I believe the TLDR version reads thus...
They released the song as a free download. It wasn't very good, borderline offensive. Everyone agreed. Sean got upset and came on here under the name of Happyfeet to call everyone ungrateful cunts. I think. Quote:
