It seems to be a pretty common social media strategy. I haven’t noticed this from the Anchoress because I follow her anyway, but there’s a Bowie fan page that’s done this to me on Instagram, and on Twitter I get regular follows/unfollows from Balham Life. I don’t find it annoying though, it’s easy enough to ignore. You can always block them if it really bothers you.

I was recently followed and unfollowed by Paul Draper of Mansun. No skin off my nose. I don’t even tweet anything on my account - or care about Paul Draper’s new music.

Paul and the Anchoress worked together on both their recent albums so I'm not surprised they use the same social media tricks!

People pay services to follow you to see if you follow them back again. I got followed by The Anchoress but I'm certain she's not sincerely interested in my odd pic of a manics gig interspersed by 500 photos of my tea

Paul Draper is so shit right now. An old man hanging onto the first Mansun album. That actually sounds like another band.

? K-Scope have just reissued AOTGL, so of course he’s promoting it. He’s going to play new songs from his second solo album on his next tour in Nov. As for old man, he’s 47, so bring on the Zimmer frame I guess?

Anyway. Random Manics thought: my stomach has been playing up again these last few days. I really really hope I’m going to be well enough for RFH on Tuesday.

I'm doing my Masters dissertation about how music fans use information, so if any of you would be kind enough to fill in my survey I'd really appreciate it! It's completely anonymous, and will only take you 10 minutes at the very least. And share if you can!

Whenever I hear "lovely Labradors outnumbered musicians", the dogs' scene from From Despair to Where comes in mind.

Just imagined James dancing around the exit signs in a t-shirt with "I hate the world more than I hate myself" on it.

Saw someone posting this on Youtube about Hold Me Like A Heaven. Sums up exactly my feelings, so I thought I'd share it over here.

"Having grown up with this band, I feel like their albums have punctuated my experience and provided a soundtrack from an angry young man through a politically minded young adult to a wistful man aware of existential dread coming to terms with my mistakes and fears that once held me back. I love the Manics, they are the band that just keeps giving."

Amen.

I've had Rewind The Film on four times today, think it deserves more love than it gets. Definitely my favourite Manics album of the decade, maybe second favourite of the century behind Journal. Remember reading a review not long before the album came out and there were words to the effect of wow where the fuck did that come from, for 30 Year War and I couldn't wait to hear it. Loved it instantly, still do. I hope that fire comes back.

It’s really, really good in parts.

However three duets (RTF is nice), a terrible instrumental, and a Nicky lead vocal brings it right down for me I’m afraid. That’s why I love RIF, it’s like James has found his voice again and has rediscovered his passion for singing. More of that on the next album please.

Bloody love the title track, lol don't see what's terrible about Manorbier but as ever, each to their own. Don't think the increasing duets and instrumentals since Postcards is anything to do with James losing passion for singing as much as not wanting to wear his voice out and wanting to add another dimension to a song with another voice. Nicky can't sing, everyone knows that and he'd be the first to admit as much. Doesn't necessarily make a crap song though, don't need to be exceptional musicians to make a great song.

From the interviews in around Futurology and Rewind the Film, James made it clear he was becoming frustrated with the sound of his own voice which is to be expected after 30 years and circa 400 songs. The problem is that he seems to be a little bit of a control hog in the studio so even when we get the guest vocalist, they're rarely given free reign unless they're someone with gravitas like Richard Hawley and Ian McCulloch. Judging by the demos, most of the duets are written before the singer is asked and hence we get more often get the singer singing from James's sheet rather than bringing their own talent to the song. That's not to say the duets are bad, they're not, but I do struggle to remember which soft singing female artist songs on which duet and that feels like a shame.
