It's much better than anything else that he has sung. Much better than Wattsville Blues and the Marlon JD demo.
When I heard he was going to do a vocal again on the album I was apprehensive but it's actually quite a good track.
Hearing it live last night was wonderful.

Worse than "The world is full of refugees / They're just like and just like me"?

The Godfather 3 reference may have also come about whilst watching telly. Maybe he was inspired by that "I like old movies / like The Godfather / Three" song from match.com!

that's no classic, but the reference to Godfather 3 made me cringe. cringe, i tell you, like no song since the heyday of Stock, Aitken & Waterman has made me cringe. it's the first time ever i have felt embarrassed for someone having to sing shit, it's no wonder James was having nothing to do with the vocals for it.

I was just coming in to say I liked "The Godfather 3" film (and I watched it once... without seeing the other two...) but SeveredJoke has beaten me to the punch over

I was just thinking that before. Seeing as getting an I-Pod ad seems to be Nicky's pet hates, he shot himself in the foot if he used this as inspiration.

But I still like the song. And even the album.

Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in.

That's a great line, what's wrong with referencing that, even if the movie is a load of cods? And it's a much better song than William's Last Words.

Some of the true shockers are on the b-sides. On the way to work I listened to 'Dying Breeds' with such gems as 'Like a dinosaur / who has lost his home / where the dodos roam / with no place to go / I believe in you / do you believe in me'.

On a separate note the 'I like old movies' ad really annoys me. The Godfather 3 was released in 1990! That's not old!

It's a great song and one of the album's best moments but yeah, that Godfather line is pretty trite (especially since the rest of the lyrics are rather swell).

the only people i know of that liked Godfather III are those, like you my friend, who somehow saw it without seeing the other two (not being judgemental, i watched the first three Rocky films in reverse order).

after someone, usually me, had taken the time to show them the first two afterwards, it was like "oh".

you are onto something here - if they had just sampled Pacino's line (the only decent line in the film) instead of having Nick embarrass himself with singing that rubbish, the song would be vastly better, "IMO".

Woah, I never said I liked it! I watched it and was pretty bored shitless waiting for something to happen.

And regards to that match.com, if I ever met a partner who liked The Godfather III it would been the shortest date in history!

apologies for suggesting guilt by implication, mate! Andy Garcia was so promising in The Untouchables, his career went a bit to shit after Nicky Wire's top Godfather, didn't it?

Exactly.

Nicky has written worse lyrics. Can't think of any off the top of my head right now but he has.

Erm...I kinda like the song.
With regards to The Godfather 3, I went to the cinema to see it when I was about 14 or 15, after seeing the first two - the film is RUINED by Sofia Coppala's 'performance' (wonder how she got the part!)

Did anything actually happen in Godfather 3? I can't remember

I love this song as well! So gutted I missed it, if only I didn't feel sick and had to leave at Leicester.....oh the shame!
