I do love this song and I especially loved this version, because of the choir who brought even some more 'gravitas' to the song.
I also liked the performance because of the seriousness of the band (except for a small smile from Nicky towards the end of it). I probably over-interpreted it but for me they were like schoolboys at the Christmas show, so eager to do well. To sum up my impression, this performance exuded a sense of pride that I like.

Which, for the band who 15 years earlier did this on the same channel, is a bit of a fucking shame.

I miss the Manics

I understand, and I don't pretend that I'm right. But don't you think they would be a little bit ridiculous now (because of their age, situation,...) if they were doing same thing ? Imagine if tomorrow they do such a performance on TV. They would be crucified the next day !

I don't want the same thing, or anything like it - but going on Strictly to play a sales-hungry MOR dirge completely straight-faced is pretty much the exact opposite. I just wish they felt like the same people, albeit 15 years on, instead of having turned into the sort of people they used to rail against.

If you showed those guys in 1994 what would be happening in 2010 I think they'd have chucked it in there and then.

You're absolutely right.

I don't know MOR but I think I've got the general idea. I understand your point of view and it must be even more difficult to accept the SCD performance if you have known and followed the band from that period. It's not my case so I am not so annoyed by their move towards mainstream audience and TV shows. And as I said, I shamelessly adore the SCD performance and I can feel a sense of pride exuding from them (probably my imagination)

Just one last thing : I have to say that what 'saddens' me the more when I look at the 2 vid is James' voice. The difference is striking.

I think how it felt says more about the person watching than the band themselves. Maybe some of us have just grown up a bit since the 90s?

Not me though, I enjoyed it.

I can enjoy the performance of Faster on TOTP and SKON on SCD. Yay me!

(I'm sure there are plenty of others who can as well!)

If they would do things like that in this era, I would laugh from Shane.

For all I'm not that fond of 'SKON', it's hardly a light song in terms of emotional content and subject matter. The only way they could achieve a deliberate mismatch of song and show similar to what you've described would be by playing an anti-mainstream song about youthful rebellion on SCD, which would have looked a bit desperate coming from fortysomethings who were happy to appear on the show.

Well, they could have played All We Make Is Entertainment.
