To me everything suggests not...If they had dabbled why wouldn't they admit it?

Nicky has given a couple of interviews that contain passing reference to Richey's extremes of behaviour including drug use - like the Q interview in March 2001:

Quote:
"I'm the first to admit that I don't push the limits like Richey did in his lifestyle. I couldn't read a book, smoke, drink, take drugs and everything else for 24 hours a day, which sometimes Richey would do."
There was quite a bit of fan gossip about speed use in the band around THB, but I've never seen any hints about it in interviews, or anything to say it was more than just gossip.

Interesting. I never heard that one before. Not to accuse anyone in particular of taking speed during that time, but if it was being consumed, I think the likely culprit would have been James.

Based in that NME Brats interview with Richey that was done around the time they were recording THB, I'm convinced Richey was smoking weed...he certainly seemed to be on a cannabis high during that interview. When you've been around enough pot heads in your time, you can totally tell when someone's been hitting the herb.

Tied for Most Awkward Manics Interview EVER, along with the one where the woman smooshes her dog hand puppet in Richey's face and tries doing a therapy session with him on-camera.

I remember reading somewhere (possible Everything) that Richey once smoked a spliff on the tour bus and the rest of the band went ape shit with him.

And yet they seemed perfectly fine with him getting pissed out of his skull every day/night.

Manics logic 101: Drinking to the point if oblivion is cool, but one spliff is simply unforgivable!

Yep. They didn't half talk some shite. And irrational fear of the unknown doesn't seem like a very manicsy thing.

Thats probably an old Working Class principle, drugs is like a weakness where as drinking is some sort of Macho ritual

Richey smoked spliff a lot, from 1993 on. Nicky was disgusted.
