If they couldn't get any money off Elastica, they were never gonna get any off the Manics. Hugh Cornwall should sue the current lead singer of the Stranglers for making money by singing exactly like him. Actually, I think I recall The Stranglers themselves were fine with it and were just glad of the publicity at that stage of their career.

I can see why you wouldn't like them though, I think they've got some good singles as well, but it's a matter of taste, whereas Golden Brown is factually amazing.

I cannot believe that people can't hear the similarity in the chorus. I was very sceptical when it was first mentioned years ago, checked it out and really was stunned by the similarity!

As well as the chorus, it's the drums at the very end that nail it for me.

Golden Brown is boredom in music form. Blah-de-blah, blah-diddy-blah. It's fucking dire, the lyrics are so overrated - images in shades of grey (well, brown), nothing cuts through the muddy mess. Yes, I know the various theories of what it's about. No, that doesn't make it any better. People like it because they hear what they want in it - I suggest detuning your radio, it sounds better. I lump it with the other musical atrocities of the 80s that seem to have garnered mainstream adulation, things like The Blockheads. No thanks.

as for "ahhhs" in the songs being similar, no not at all, they're just both "ahhhs", which sound different. I really can't see the similarities, I guess if you really really slow the chorus down of Duchess it could sound a tiny bit like Tolerate, but it's tenuous enough to suggest this "similarity" is purely coincidential. Kind of like The Kinks "Sunny Afternoon" sounds a little bit like The Cribs' "Hello? Oh..", except much less so

What about that Oasis song that sounds almost exactly like Golden Brown... Part of the Queue I think it's called. Did they try to sue Noel Gallagher for that?

I wasn't sure if you'd read the subtext, but yes, you did it like a pro.
