I agree, I don't think it could be considered a failure. I don't know if it was enough of a roaring success to convince them that they want to try and pull the exact same formula again though. I mean, if the album and singles had both shot to no 1 then maybe they'd have thought 'great, we can bang another one of these out next september' but I'm not convinced it was that convincing.

I think they should take a couple of years off. Spend time with their families, watch bad tv, whatever... And then come back and make whatever album they want to make. If it's rubbish at least it'll be their rubbish and not at Sony's insistence.

I really like PFAYM. I like all their albums for different reasons. But I do think they should change the way they release singles in the future as the charts now just arent going to favour songs already on an album, guitar music in general is suffering and barely gets a look in these days. A bit of success is nice ya know

James won't take any time off. He's too much of a workaholic!

Maybe he'll have to if Mylene decides she wants to have a baby as he is in his forties afterall.

I think the next album will be very similar to Know Your Enemy.
To be honest, I don't really have any reasons. I just think it will be very self undulgent as Nicky mentioned, punky guitars mixed with politicial and joyful lyrics. I really don't know apart from saying that. I know I'd like to see them experiment more with the Journal For Plague Lovers sound, despite not having Richey lyrics to inspire that sound. Tough one.

Put a selection of Patrick Jones poetry to music - effectively a third Manics lyricist - while they decide in what direction to take their own lyrical expression. Mourning the death of socialism is just strange, they're brighter than that and have yet to embrace any politics of post-1980s ideology.
Golden Platitudes' line 'Where did it all go wrong?' can easily be answered with 'Because it was all bollocks'. Move on and say something about today, and don't worry about not being able to appear working class anymore, it's been a long time since that's where they were and that's nothing to be ashamed of, doesn't mean their minds are worthless without that supposed 'sense of belonging'. There's no working class anymore anyway - there's upper class, middle class and dole class. |
