it's not that we think it's cool, it's just that when you have experienced (or still experiencing) one of those issues, you're actually more indulgent towards them and you tend to try and get comfort from singers/musicians/artists who have been through it like you have. you stop seeing them as issues and start seeing them like a part of your life, so they become kinda normal. not cool, normal.
you simply learn how to deal with them, you have to deal with them because they're a part of what you are.
and talking about those issues is a good thing, even if you have to put your face in it (like Richey did). there're still too many people thinking we're some kind of crazy gits.

My 2cents obviously

17) That all Manics fans self-harm
18) That Nicky's gay because he cross-dresses

I don't know anyone who assumes Manics fans are all intelligent or open-minded . The friends I have made through them certainly are, but not outside that. Probably coz Manics fans are just a random collection of people, right.

19) All Manics fans think and act as one, and all share the same/similar opinions on music/politics/most things

I was going to put that one. A few of my friends are really confused by his cross-dressing; one asked me what I was listening to at 6th form once and I said I was listening to the Manics, and she asked if she could have a listen because she knew I liked them so much. The song I was listening to at the time was Born A Girl, and trying to explain it failed:
"So he's gay then?"
"No...he does like to wear women's clothes and make-up but he's not gay."
"But straight men don't usually do that."
Me deciding to dress up like Nicky for fancy dress day confused a lot of people as well - "So you're dressing up as a man dressed as a woman? That's just weird, because you're a girl"

I was kind of surprised when I found out that Nicky is not gay...

This is mad...I don't know why people can't separate the difference between homosexuality and transvestites Besides, I think it's a welsh thing....I once met a man on a train in Harlech with a very flowery dress on.

As Michael Stipe once said:

Quote:
CHARLIE ROSE: How hard was it for you to sort of acknowledge bisexuality when you had to do that or did it or what—
MICHAEL STIPE: I resent that term.
CHARLIE ROSE: You resent the term?
MICHAEL STIPE: Not personally—
CHARLIE ROSE: You used it.
MICHAEL STIPE: No, I didn't.
CHARLIE ROSE: You didn't. I thought somebody—you didn't use it?
MICHAEL STIPE: No.
CHARLIE ROSE: What did you use?
MICHAEL STIPE: No, that would be—if there was a category that I fell into, that would be where I fall because I—because I—I have desire for men and women.
CHARLIE ROSE: Right.
MICHAEL STIPE: That's out. But I resent the categorization of sexuality. I think it's—
CHARLIE ROSE: So, you feel the same way about "heterosexuality" and "homosexuality" as well as terms?
MICHAEL STIPE: Yeah, and, I mean, there are people that are very comfortable identifying with one or the other with whatever—which I'm fine with. But I'm not comfortable with that. I think sexuality is more fluid than that. And I feel like—I feel like the era where the need for categorization of something as fluid as desire is behind us.
—The Charlie Rose Show, May 7, 1998

I wouldn't make such a hard separation between gay or not.

# They (the band) keep getting better and better

(I'm sorry, I love them, I really do. Never fail to be amazing live, mean such a lot to me on basically every level.. but their more recent stuff is just a bit too slick and polished/pver-produced for me. I prefer the early to mid career stuff..)

# They are a completely different band to the one before 1996.

Untrue.

Ok they changed their sound, but then does THB sound anything like GATS or GT? Not even in the slightest! I don't get why some people use the event of Richey disappearing as a massive seperator for the band, who said that they wouldn't have recorded EMG if Richey had stayed? Oh wait, they had recorded some of it! A Design for Life was waiting to happen, it might have taken a little longer but musically eventually i think they would've written it. The whole 'Screamadelica meets Pantera' direction Richey talked about was total bollocks, much like the claims Nicky makes up everytime they go into the studio to do a new album. In fact i wouldn't be surprised if Nicky was actually the one who told Richey that was what EMG was going to sound like...

Then you had the 'CoR' fans stating that 'it was chart music', 'they've sold out' etc...interesting things to say about a band who went on TOTP with most of their singles since they signed to Sony!

The only one valid point anyone has made is that they didn't sound as angry after Richey vanished, but then would anyone if their best mate went missing??? That said the live performances were still full on, and there were a good few B-Sides with that early fire on. Wasn't until 'Masses' came out that they started fully recording like that again, but then had they not taken a breather we wouldn't have had the excellent subtleness of TIMTTMY.
