If they are going to put 70 songs on their next (triple?) album, we're going to get at least an album full of EWYS-style songs

it can be done, as long as you have another person in the room qualified to give you medical attention.

Right, I have just downloaded and listened to it. What lets it down totally is Nicky's complete lack of menace. James would have made it sound EVIL! Shame as I like the electronic edge of it. Oh well.

It's not my favourite thing. The lyrics / delivery of them is/are the worst aspect for me, but I just think it's a horrible mess, as opposed to the glorious mess I think they were aiming for. It would have made an appropriate B-side to Watsville Blues if that had ever been a single. Bluetooth was more topical then as well.

The weird thing is, the "I'm being disconnected/I'm being disconnected" reminds me of Alexei Sayle's songs he used to sing on his 80's/90's series STUFF!
I can picture Alexei dancing to it more than any other Manics track.
TGW, listen to it on repeat like what I did. By the third time I bet it'll be one of your favourites.
(Even though The Passing Show will make you think more seriously about a Manics album without James!)

Summed up beautifully.

A Manics album without James is total anathema to me! Nicky will still sound rubbish no matter how many times I listen to it!

I've gone all TGW over this song and cannot bear to see it mocked.
Seriously, if this is the future then it'll be the best direction to take.
Although next time... Sean sings!!!

Sometimes the Manics go and completely surprise with something completely strange and wonderful, this time it's Engage with Your Shadow. It's like Throbbing Gristle, quite industrial and simply fucking amazing!!! Even though Nicky is on vocals he doesn't try to sing and therefore it's perfectly tolerable. It pisses all over anything off PFAYM, it is a million times better than any track off it. Would be great to see them do an album entirely like this, they'd lose at least 60% of their current fanbase and gain industrial fans but it would certainly be worth it! Seeing how depressingly poor their last album was, this is exactly what is needed for them to go forward.

I don't care if this warranted a new thread or not, i'm just shocked that they did something as majorly obscure as this. Anything is possible now, this should've been the third single!
+1

I agree with everything you said !! I hope they record this 70s songs album and it packed with songs like Engage With Your Shadow. The impact could be very similar to Generation Terrorists, people hate it or they love it..... at least they would be making some kind of artistic statement, something worthy of a listen.

Sean is doing the whispering prehaps?

*shut up Nick! shut up Nick! shut up Nick!*

As long as James sings it all and the b-sides!

Nicky's droning makes it my least fave from the Postcards b-side era. Thank goodness it never made the album!
