I thought it was pretty crap too!!. Send away the Tigers had some decent tracks but hated that plodding 'Dad rock' of PFAYM.

I love 'Dad Rock'! (which along with ELO probably includes Rush as well! )

I still really like most of PFAYM, but I feel like I'm in the minority on this forum on that.

postcards from a young man and golden platitudes are good songs. The album's okaaaay but i wouldn't recommend it to a new fan. My main gripe with the whole campaign was them only playing 3 or 4 songs from it on the tour. The spring SATT tour got most of the album I believe. Seems like they had much more faith in that one.
As for fans dumping them after it ..seems a bit harsh. Don't know if this was because JFPL was so good, postcards seemed worse or that they were on their way out after SATT. The I *don't like em any more, i'm selling my entire collection* makes me think Really?? after one duff album? But i suspect same thing happened after Lifeblood**. ** not a duff album. A Joy of an album.. a JOY. Last edited by hummingbird; 02-06-2013 at 20:45. |

I really enjoyed Postcards at first, but that's mostly because at that time I was just discovering the Manics and SATT and EMG were the only albums I knew well. In that company the album sounded great, I felt. But I stopped listening to it after about 6 or 7 months to discover the older stuff and I have to say, Postcards has paled significantly in comparison. Re-listening to it lately, I definitely started agreeing with those who criticize the lyrics, some of it actually made me cringe, now, esp. Don't Be Evil. The only songs I still love are Postcards, Autointoxication and some of the B-Sides.
Ps. James was stunning at the second Brixton gig, he was on fire!! I loved that gig!

I'm not in the camp. I think it's an honest, reflective album that really represented where the band are/were at this stage of life and career. They're dads in their early 40's, finally getting comfortable in their own skins, and the album is frequently smooth and Radio 2-friendly as a result.
Lots of comparisons to SATT I note, and as I was listening to said album today, I'm happy to say I prefer Postcards. Perhaps because it doesn't have Underdogs on it.

I like underdogs. I don't give a shit about that edit and i didn't for once think that *this one's for the freaks* insults manics fans. But lets not dig all that up again

Well, Postcards is really the worst manics album. I haven't listened to it since 2011, I don't want to say never but I'm not expecting myself to listen to it again. I'm slowly forgetting the songs which is good because they're soooo bad.
On the other hand I listen to b-sides regulary. They are not the best songs in the world, but I like them.

Not among my favourites but still decent and better than Satt for me.I truly love Golden Platitudes and Skon though I have to admit I barely listen to most of the other songs. And I have to agree with those who say that some b-side are better than the album songs.

Reading this thread has provoked me to go and listen to the album again.
I rather liked it upon release. Listening to it now however, the songs don't quite have the same power. Much of the album more or less passed me by, and I had forgotten most of the songs that weren't singles. |
