Somehow, I don't think Nicky's mum wrote to these artists saying he was terminally ill or something. Maybe just saying something like he's ill (flu, ...) so he can't go to the gig and is really disappointed. I don't really blame her for that, she seems so sweet.

Well, it was obviously worded in a strong enough way to inspire a response, and make the hall keep passing them on to the artists.
Maybe he had the longest case of flu in history. |

Exactly. When you write to a band and say "my child is ill," the people in question are unlikely to think: "Ah, poor scamp has the sniffles." Out of interest, I asked my mum what she'd think if someone wrote that sort of letter and she said: "I'd guess they meant their kid had a serious illness."
Then she agreed that it's a bit of a weird and not exactly nice way of going about getting autographs. Hysteria? No. Expressing an opinion? Yep.

I do understand your point. It's just that the "terminally ill" version didn't occur to me on my first impression of the story.

I swear this happened on Neighbours once when Hannah Martin pretended she had cancer or something to meet some cheesy pop star bloke she was obsessed with.
Anyway...it does seem an odd thing to bring up and it also seems an odd thing for the NME to report purely by itself. Even if Nicky's mum didn't actually say 'terminally ill', I would assume those in receipt of the postcards would probably think the worst, because if all you had was a cold, it doesn't really warrant special treatment and most people wouldn't even bother writing in the first place if it was so trivial. |

No wonder he's happy being sad.

Ok, so has anyone pulled/planned to pull this stunt on the Wire? Own up.

Well I think offering an opinion & then a judgement on a situation you have so little information on is hysterical (no not in a funny way).
I know it's Morrissey but surely "Get well soon" is a bit of callous thing to send to child that has been portrayed as terminally ill, no?
