Although multi-formatting can be a boost, the singles chart (based on sales alone) is healthier than it has ever been. More singles were sold last year than in any previous year. Flash back a decade, before downloads began to count, you could easily go Top 40 with sales of just 4000. In fact, the Manics benefited at the time. Consecutive near chart-toppers with The Love of Richard Nixon and Empty Souls.

The band have said that it's not about Richey. So it's probably not about Richey.

For what it's worth I believe Nicky when he says the song was inspired by the Øresund bridge and all that, but of course they must have known people would read the Richey interpretation into it, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. And anyway, words as lyrics/poetry/political rhetoric/etc. can nearly always have, or be interpreted as having multiple meanings, as the line "…had another meaning" in the song itself refers to.
