12-12-1998, Glasgow SECC
4-12-2002, Glasgow SECC 14-12-2004, travelled about 300 miles to get to Glasgow and then the concert was cancelled 15-4-2005, Edinburgh Corn Exchange 25-5-2009, Glasgow Barrowlands 2-10-2010, Edinburgh Corn Exchange Would like to be able to manage more, but living in the Orkney Isles (nearly as far north as you can go!) makes getting to gigs a bit more expensive and time taking. |

December 2004 - Wembley Arena - Lifeblood tour
My first manics gig, had been a fan since 98 ish, but never seen them live as I didn't want to go on my own, and none of my mates were into the band. Anyway, finally was in a position to go (my girlfriend somewhat reluctantly agreed to go to Wembley). Have to say though that the gig for me was a huge disappointment, I bought one of the £10 Lifeblood tour programmes, only to find when I opened it that it had no text, just a few pictures of the band wearing face masks. I'm sure it was very artistic, but I felt a bit ripped off at the time. The gig itself was really low key, the band seemed to be having an off night, Nicky in particular was quite surly throughout (I think I've since read though that this gig was one where they realised that Lifeblood had been a mistake, and that playing a half empty Wembley arena was depressing). I remember James' accoustic interlude being quite funny though, he played the intro to Revol and sang the first line and then said 'nah, it wasn't that f*cking good', and then went into Small Black Flowers instead. April 2005 - Leeds University Refectory - PPAF tour Decided to give them another go, as this venue was really small and thought it would be good to see them up close. Hadn't really paid much attention to the setlists they'd been doing since the Lifeblood tour, so was expecting another barrage of new stuff, so was delighted to get the likes of Archives Of Pain and Ifwhiteamerica..... Was also great to hear Design For Life being played at the start of the set as well. 5 years.....hm, must be time for another gig I reckon |

The population is about 20,000, and a mixture of Orcadians and "incomers" - mainly from mainland Scotland or England. There are very few "ethnic minorities" here. A lot of "incomers" are attracted to the place in the long summer days (it doesn't actually get properly dark in midsummer) but do not last the winter. It is also seen as a place that you can escape to, but being a small community, you are more likely to actually confront yourself. Religion is not a huge thing here - most are protestant Church of Scotland but there are various others active, and no sign of any sectarianism or anything. A lot of people would take the line "we don't talk about love, we only want to get drunk" literally, but there are also a lot of creative people, whether artists, musicians or writers. Crime is thankfully very low. There have only been three murders in the last 30 years. Drug abuse is generally restricted to softer drugs and drug-related crime is practically non-existant. Housing is much the same problem as the rest of the country (houses selling for holiday homes or buy-to-let preventing young people being able to afford their own houses) but homelessness is very low. The main employers on the islands are fishing, farming, a (smaller than it used to be) oil terminal and council/nhs. The renewable energy industry is growing, but doesn't employ that many people. It suffers from a "brain-drain", when students go off to university, the majority find jobs outwith Orkney and stay away (although many come back later on in life). |

I've been to Orkney on holiday in May and it was lovely - sunny weather, interesting historical sites and and a good folk festival.
Shetland was much more remote and bleak especially in the north. |

Indeed! Went with some particularly awesome friends who made it just that little bit special. We all held hands as we sang along to ADFL; the only thing missing was a swaying lighter held aloft!
