I don't claim to be an expert either but I highly doubt even sets of a dozen CDs would cost more to mass produce than even a fairly small capacity USB drive. CDs are much simpler items.

CDs are cheaper than chips to make. Thinking about it in a couple of years we'll be listening to things from "the cloud" anyways. We probably won't even need earphones as things a microwaved into our brains with track names beamed onto our eyeballs. I probably won't even need to choose as endless recommendations stream from the heavens. Bring on the matrix.
