One year on, Journal For Plague Lovers is the 3rd best album by Manic Street Preachers. By encompassing most of the styles the Manics have played with over the years, it's almost the quintessential Manics album without being the best.
That is all.

A great record, uniformly good but, for me, lacking real stand-out tracks that pretty well all their other albums have.

I still listen to it at least once every 2 weeks, no other album gets that treatment

Still really love it, it's been in my car cd for the past 12 months and I don't think I'll ever get fed up with it.

So the clear message to MSP is; more of the same please.
And less of the SATT.

Gave it a listen this morning, I had neglected it for the last few months, and wow, it hasn't lost its power.
Best Manics lyrics in 10 years, great tunes from start to finish (minus VSEC), very post-punk. All Is Vanity is still my favourite. And I'm still impressed by Nicky's unexpected musical talent (the music for Marlon JD, the bassline of JFPL, his singing on WLW...). Also it reminded me of the tour and now I'm all nostalgic. |

I actually like it a lot more than I did when it came out. I was quite harsh with it, picking on bits that were perfectly fine. Still prefer the demo version of Pretension/Repulsion (or even better, the spliced version of the two) but it's definitely one of their best albums.

I think that our beloved Manics did a great job with this album. They must have been under a lot of different kinds of pressure but they pulled it off and what a way of doing it. Im still in love with that album. Everything they did related to it was perfect. One of the things that I deeply loved about it was that it wasn't like they wanted to bring to life the soup opera of Richard's disappearence. They just wanted to pay a tribute to him as friends and as musicians. God bless them =) It was an obvious pleasure to read through Richey's words again eventhough they are quite old they seem somehow so fresh. I have to say that I almost went wild when they announced that they will start working on sth like this =D Related to their musical career I wish them the best too. I know they will keep giving us records to be proud of. They might have closed a chapter but this is not over yet.

Last night I watched the "Shadows & Words" documentary on the making of JFPL. Really cool. I would love to hear more of the acoustic versions that were played. Are they available anywhere?

I remember the day well. I woke up. I walked to ASDA. I picked it off the shelf, payed, and walked home all excited, and a little bit faster than walking there.
Then I listened to JCEQT first because I'd heard it on Jools Holland. Then in one fowl swoop. And when All Is Vanity came on, I got tingles down my back. I still do now. Then in the afternoon I went and did an exam. I think it was Economics. I used the physical CD to play it for the first time in ages earlier instead of on my computer or ipod. After William's Last Words I forgot about Bag Lady and started dozing off. Then I nearly filled my pants when I heard the start of it. The good times were back. |
