The problem with Lifeblood is that the Manics never sound like the Manics did/do. And they really, really didn't with Lifeblood.

But I fucking adore that album. Lyrically lamented mid-tempo melancholy and cynical crooners in a bleak, cold sound that one didn't really expect. It's archetype-Manics but then not.

Agreed. If any other band had made that album, it might not have been seen as such a failure. The fact it sounds nothing like the Manics and doesn't even feel like the Manics is what turns a lot of fans off, I reckon.

No, GATS is 100% shit...none of this "half" business.

I guess if you truly don't like a record, it's hard to understand why others would. I mean, who doesn't know of at least one album where the mere mention of it makes you cringe yet others hail it as a masterpeice?

Same for me, although I'd add Roses In The Hospital to the list. The recorded version isn't brilliant, but its always sounded good live.

My Lifeblood Favourites:

1985
Empty Souls
I Live To Fall Asleep
A Song For Departure
Solitude Sometimes Is
Cardiff Afterlife

See what I'm saying about Liefblood? There really is no consensus.

Did I spell that correctly?

No.

Edit: Ooops. You did. But then I could've just saved it with a "no, you spelled it 'consensus'" joke. Oh well.

Best five GATS for me are Sleepflower, La Tristessa Durera, Roses In The Hospital and Nostalgic Pushead and From Despair To Where.
There are at least Life Becoming A Landslide, Symphony Of Tourette and on a good day Drug Drug Druggy fight it out for 6th place.

Is GATS the closest the Richey Manics got to a scaled down PFAYM? It mass communicates more than the Seattle bands did.

Depends which Seattle band you're talking about.

GATS is better than anything the band have done post EMG. And that is the end of the matter.

I like the randomness of KYE, its all over the place but that's part of its charm for me. Lifeblood is also very under-rated, maybe in 15-20 years time it will get the recognition it deserves.

I'm sitting here going 'No. Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! NO!!!!' at these comments. Apart from the positive ones of course! For me Lifeblood DOES sound like the Manics just that they're doing something different with their sound.
