I like the song, but do they really sing "hatred and failure"? Sounds more like "hatred and viagra".

A highlight of the album for me. I've never been a massive fan of Green's voice but I think it works well here. I like the melancholy feel to it, when I first heard it I thought of 'I Live To Fall Asleep'. Also the guitar chords in the intro remind me of Athlete, weirdly.

Also in melodic terms it reminds me of 'Black Holes For the Young'...just because of how hugely powerful the harmonising is and just the sheer brilliance of the songwriting |

Futurology is going strong. Been listening to it since it came out and not a single problem yet. I do agree DAC(H) is less exciting now, but I still love it where it is, as a centerpiece, for sheer grandeur's sake. On the flipside, the opening - Futurology and especially WMTTB - are immensely enjoyable. And the extra tracks section is also really fun. God damn Anti Social Manifesto is an unexpected earworm. |

They were indeed both meant to be singles weren't they?
Artistically it probably was a waisted opportunity, but then that particular album and its singles sold pissloads so I guess they can't complain.

We are way off topic here, but yeah, the album does need at least two spikier breathers inbetween the (admittedly stunning) sub-oceanic dirge of it's first half, so as not to bury the listener, as it does. It's not easy to sequence that stuff in there, though. I guess they felt it flows better as a more homogenous piece.

The rumour at the time (prior to and around the time of if you tolerate this's release and that went around the manics fan convention in London in the summer of 98) was that Black Holes for The Young was supposed to be an album track but Sophie Ellis Bextor went blabbing to all and sundry about it and the band or the record company got annoyed and decided to pull the track.
According to Nicky Prologue to History was meant to be on the album but he decided to pull it in order to make the album have 13 songs. He said it was something to do with breaking a jinx/making a point that they could have hit album with 13 songs despite the holy bible having flopped with 13 songs. I don't think anyone actually asked why he didn't just pull born a girl... The Black Holes story should probably be taken with a pinch of salt but it could have happened as there was quite a lot of hype at the time about it and some said that she was trying to use the hype to help 'TheAudience' rather than the manics. Of course the supposed story behind prologue would make that less likely with regard to Nicky wanting 13 songs. Last edited by savemejebus; 17-07-2014 at 08:20. |

Love this. From the first listen it just stuck in my head. I've always loved Green and his voice so this is like a double hit with James as well. I'd love to hear this on tour. The demo is great as well.

I really like it; even though watching Scritti Polliti support the Manics at the Brixton gigs was a pretty painful experience, I don't mind Green Gartside on this. But tbh the part that makes the song for me is James' stupidly melodic aaaaah's. Goosebump inducing
