I wasn't on this board when the Manics used a touring guitarist for the first time. Were people having kittens over them 'replacing Richey'?

I think they did wrestle with the idea for ages. After Richey disappeared, it took until 2004 for their touring party to have a second guitar player. I remember reading something from Wire around that time where he said something similar, and commented about how it made them sound so much better as a live act.

Actually, when I joined there was a feeling of "It's about time they got an extra live guitarist" that seemed to be here.
But you'd have to ask someone who was actually on here when Wayne first appeared.
Touring with JDB's solo shows must have helped to sweeten the pill, those that saw them.

Put it this way, I would never accept a co-lyric from Wayne, but if he's got a few riffs that sound "Dead Manicsy" then the least he can do is play them so the band can either laugh about it or steal it!

I think Wayne would be better off with the Stereophonics than the Manics.

He does a job live, although after seeing THB in Glasgow I don't see a point in having two guitarists. A keyboard/piano you sort of need, two guitars not so much.

It was great to hear them as a three piece BUT for me it sounds so much better with a second guitar, even if that second guitar plays a bare minimum mr Edwards style

They could always rely on the old Akai instead of Wayne, as so many bands do these days. What used to be live isn't always these days...and I dare say that certain JFPL tracks weren't quite as live as might have appeared to have been the case. Can't remember which track it was now, but at the Wolverhampton JFPL show in 2009 there was a small part of guitar riff that wasn't coming off the stage.

Generally no, especially those who had never seen or met Richey, there was a sense that it was OK amongst people with no sense of history.

I was at the first show in Brighton, and I can unambigiously state I ABSOLUTELY FUCKING HATED them getting a new guitarist, especially with sneaking him on stage without an announcement or any warning. Now of course, I prefer the 4 piece version but don't feel that strongly about it now.

But Wayne as a member of the band? No. No. No. The Manics have always been to me a gang of schoolfriends who grew up together, not just bunch of blokes making a noise.

Might have been JCEQT. One of the roundhouse shows had that riff playing at one pint whilst James wasn't playing. I think he was playing the riff as well as the track, and someone just played the tape too early.

they relied on this quite heavily on the Lifeblood stuff especially on jools holland and the radio session they did, no harm in it to be honest, it works perfectly for backing vocals, strings, guitar will always sound better live though.

a few years ago my band went abit mental with using backing tracks, loads of fun though!

there's one bootleg (National Treasures?) where James introduces the band as 'my best mate and my brother' - and that's why I don't think there'll ever be anyone else.

I didn't speak to many other Manics fans when they used Guy Massey for the first time. I remember voicing my support for a backing guitarist at gigs but saying it wouldn't be right somebody officially joining the band, and I still think that.

I actually quite like Wayne on songs like You Love Us and Motorcycle Emptiness, those songs sound bolstered by the simple backing chords. It's the likes of No Surface or Sleepflower which sound messy with his playing, not to mention the backing vocals. He can clearly sing, but his voice clashes with James'.
