It's decent. Nothing amazing, not really memorable. I can't remember how it goes right now, so will need to listen to it again. Not gonna set the world alight or get any quality radio or TV play, but maybe the next single will. Doesn't even seem like a proper single release to me... no proper video, no physical releases or even just a limited vinyl, no TV performances.... oh well It'll grow on me, new Manics stuff always does
Oh, it's good that the forum is back up and running too!!

Love the new single, but like yourself, it's a bit odd that it's not got a physical vinyl release.

It gives a nod back to Everything Must Go maybe no? Sweeping & the music marry the lyrics....bring to mind vast blue skies over empty beaches...
Not catching me like Futurology did though just yet but Manic fans do like a moaaan

It's growing on me and I like the lyric video or whatever it's called. The chorus is a bit of an earworm.

Forum back!!! Yes!!
I wasn't playing the track over and over as I did for WMTTB at first. But did that for MGMT's "When You Die". Ironically one of the short blasts of tunes from the Resistance Is Futile trailer that made me think "Oh..." but it's in my head a lot recently. Can't bring myself to listen to anything other than International Blue. Is that a sign? It's at least got a harder power to it than INW(JTEOL) and SMTW will still get played in their sets, but as lead off singles go this is their strongest single since 2010. But then was Europa Geht Durch Mich released as a single? Or was that a video only? And BACKK!! MISSED YIU FUCKERS!! |

Yeah, this is just another 'another shot at mass communication'
They always open albums like this. We all know real stuff will be packed in mid album section and towards the end. |

Exactly! Or like U2's last couple of albums. Perfectly mediocre rockist crap!

I like the solo that sounds like it belongs on a Sega arcade game from the turn of the century. I'm always a sucker for that cheesy shit.
The rest recycles rather than builds on the 80s and therefore sounds tired and the production is overcooked to an unpleasant PFYAM degree. In the era of Ed Sheeran, these kitchen sink shots at mass communication are so flawed. Even by Nicky's usual standards, for him to call this 'the new Motorcycle Emptiness' is concerning. But it's not awful. I'm not offended by how crap it is like I have been with past efforts and it's almost as good as Liam Gallagher's single but not Noel's. It depends where they put it on the album. If it's the opening track, all hope is lost. If they stick it where Australia was on EMG, it might work and I might opt not to skip it. |

I think he refers to it as a new "Motorcycle Emptiness" based on the riff.

It's bizarrely positive for the Manics...that bit I'm finding hard...but I do like the chorus...walking into an empty room framed with a blue sky suggesting limitless possibilities and the endless nothingness of the sky as a freedom that's not a void, nor a symbol of release through death.....I might be overthinking. usually do. About everything.

I am just so relieved that they’ve managed to write a single where the lyrics actually scan and go with the music! Hasn’t happened for a while.
Really enjoying it. |

Am I only one who detected the return of the unnecessary GT-style electronic drumming?
I liked it, sounds like PFAYM b-side with an 80s futurology twist. I hope that's as mainstream as the album gets though. The band are at the their worst when trying to replicate their best.

The verses are brilliant. Guitars, lyrics, melodies, synth. Fucking great. Chorus isn’t the strongest but it’s not bad for sure.
I actually prefer this to walk me to the bridge as a lead single.
