Yea no, only in swedish, I translated it because saying Du och Jag, Döden felt weird, like some raggare grandpa talking about his favorite dansband in Umea. It's incredible, D&JD. I quite often find myself seriously sad about how hard music tanked after the aughts. When previous generations had their "old tim'a rock n roll / today's music ain't got the same soul" moment they were blissfully idiotic. Until us millennials got a sudden precipitous drop into the total economic non-viability of anything but one man produced playlist fodder -- right around when streaming came and ended pop music as a cultural force. The brain drain out of music means people like Nicky and Richey -- or Joakim Berg from kent -- just don't go into music any more, they just undertake other ventures. Which means as a millennial you were instantly OLD in your early 30s and now in my late 30s I feel a fossil.

While my dad could still listen to the best Radiohead records in his 50s, along with, say, Lifeblood, and 05 kent (which he did) and also got Joy Division, Einstürzende Neubauten and Bauhaus in his 30s -- by the time I'll be 50 there won't have been big intellectual event music for twenty years.

The first one is: you are right. I'm in my late 30s like you and I have the same feeling: each year I buy about 20-30 records, but these are records by bands/artist whose first record came out in the 80s-90s-00s, so I'm "updated" (these are albums that came out in 2023) but at the same time I feel old for the same reason as you. Anyway, I wonder whether it's the same for every generation, including the one of our parents.

The second one is: I don't know if you are Swedish. I am Italian, and I can listen only to music "I understand", so sung in Italian or in English. Could I appreciate music by Kent? I ask you because I am a big fan of Cardigans, who sang in English, and in 1998 their guitarist and then main songwriter, Peter Svensson, released an album as Paus with Joakim Berg. Well, it's one of my favourite albums ever, even if it's sung in Swedish (and of course I cannot understand a single word), so I was wondering whether I could appreciate Kent or not. I really don't know.

Then I absolutely think you can appreciate Kent.
Besides, Kent did English versions of two of their albums.
And, the best Paus song is sung by Jocke - an Eldkvarn cover: ’Kärlekens tunga’

If you like Jocke and Peter’s work together You should look up the songs they did for Tityo together, I believe the entire ‘Come Along’ album.

I think after - possibly around Oct/Nov time. But who knows? They're working on a new album so that could come first but then it makes no sense to tour with Suede if they can do a tour promoting new material.

It is very hard for me to imagine anyone who likes Manics and Cardigans wouldn't absolutely fall in love with kent. I don't think the language thing is important at all -- I don't understand swedish nor have i ever. Only makes them sound more intriguing. I can't really understand JDB's welsh accent either, most of the time, especially THB I still suggest you give kent a try. Start with Vapen & Ammunition, eerie pop perfection. Then try Hagnesta Hill, an album drowning in nostalgia that outdoes even the Manics at their most nostalgiic. Then Du & Jag, Döden is their absolute peak -- an apoteosis perhaps best understood after other albums. Lyricstranslate has great translations of their songs -- their lyrics are also incredible. The only reason I can imagine why anyone wouldn't like kent is inability to listen to non-english. Otherwise, very hard to see how rock fans who like deep dive discographies in the vein of MSP's have the luxury to turn down an entire discography like kent's in 2023. Seriously recommended! The best thing I did for myself in life -- literally the best thing that's brought me most happiness -- is learn to listen to music with great lyrics in languages I don't understand. Einstürzende Neubauten (german) and Kino (russian) and kent (swedish) have given me more joy and meaning than all english language music together. I do come from a very small language group (estonian) so that might have something to do with this affinity, but still. Never too late to become entranced by elven sounds! Maybe think of kent like it's all in quenya from Lord of the Rings?

Sorry for my very late response, but after thinking about it, I think I'm about to give it a go. For me it's not very simple, I take the new-music-thing very seriously, so I'll go in chronological order, one album per week, one listen per day, so after a week I've listened to that album 7 times and I can go with the next one. I've been doing this for so many years, so I'll do it also this time.

About the non-English thing: I understand it for your "small language group", and I'm Italian, so in Italy is very common to listen to Italian music. I also listen to UK/US/English language music because, even if I cannot understand 100% of what I hear (but I can look for lyrics, of course), I can understand much of it, and not understanding anything quite scares me. Anyway, you convinced me, so 2024 (at least the first three months) will be the year of "Kent as new music". I'll let you know, of course.

Kent is very much missed, their entire discography is indeed excellent. I used to buy the albums in English as those were the only ones available in the shops here in Belgium. But then I ordered the Swedish versions of Isola and Hagnesta Hill via a Swedish webshop which cost me an arm and a leg (remember this is nearly 25 years ago) but I treasure these albums a lot and prefer these to the English versions.

So I second the recommendation : go and discover Kent. In Swedish preferably.

My mother tongue is Dutch btw :-)

I don't want to turn my second favourite MSP album's thread into a thread about Kent, but I really want to thank you for letting me listen to them. I'm in the third week of my "weekly plans" (an album per week in chronological order, listened to once per day) and I'm really overwhelmed by this band, in a good way.
And the language is not really an issue: it sounds like English sung with a weird local accent, so my brain can refuse to process the words and so it's ok.
And I'm going to listen only the Swedish albums, even for those whose English version exist (like Isola, which I'm listing in these days).

Nice! Definitely go with the Swedish versions of Isola and Hangesta Hill, as they're (rightly) held to be superior in every way by fans.

It'll turn back into a Lifebloodathon the moment we hear something new about it. Crossing fingers for new mixes of b-sides...

I cannot imagine a version of Empty Souls that is better than the studio version, but I am very open to try to listen to it! Where can I find it? (even if in low quality)
