Hmm, my main criticism of the record at this early stage is a lack of emotion in the delivery. This Sullen Welsh Heart for example, James sounds completely impassive, despite delivering lines like "I don't want my children to grow up like me" and "I want to go to sleep, but I cannot I close my eyes". Only RTF, AHATS and 30YW struck me as especially emotive.

TIMT and Lifeblood were far more emotionally-charged records, as are many of the b-sides.

"This Sullen Welsh Heart" is a song about feeling defeated though Stu and so Bradders sings it as such. You might even call his delivery sullen

My favourite tracks so far, that I would give 5 stars in iTunes now that I've listened to the album several more times, are;

"This Sullen Welsh Heart"
"(I Miss The) Tokyo Skyline"
"Running Out Of Fantasy"
"3 Ways To See Despair"
"30 Year War"

And I've also softened on SMTW a little bit; it's a nice song but it absolutely does NOT belong on this album.

SMTW doesn't jar as much as I was expecting it to. I think it fits. I can't fault anything about this album.

Hmm see I don't even hear that, he almost sounds like he's singing with a smile on his face, the whole vocal has an air of that X Factor thing of a contestant covering a sad song but missing the point and acting like it's a cheery upbeat tune. Maybe it's just my shit ears.

the telegraph has given it 4 stars.

Elton John's new album is out on Monday. With Postcards it was Rod Stewart. Who we getting in April?

Precisely. It's a melancholic song about resignation. I don't get "a smile on his face" at all... James delivery is perfect, complemented wonderfully by Lucy Rose's. This is best evidenced in the demo, where he sings the chorus with his more typically intense singing voice and it doesn't suit it nearly as well.

After hearing RTF live with Hawley in Newport last night, I've fallen back in love with the song again. Highlight of the evening for me along with TSWH.

Amazon customer reviews are always the best.

My wife heard one of the songs on this CD and enjoyed it so much she has purchased it. CD 1. is fine and she enjoyed it but when she went to listen to CD 2 (Demo) the first song she heard had the "F" word sung? many times. WHY? do this group really think that ordinary people talk like this all the time. I don't think so. A good CD spoilt by needless bad language.

I actually felt that James' repetition of the chorus added urgency whereas I look at Lucy Rose' vocals as sugarcoating only. There is nothing in her voice that suggests she feels any of the emotions expressed, her voice is just a pretty ornament. I prefer the demo and have put that as the album opener instead.
