It's got to be 'This Is Yesterday' for me. It's not long or complex, it's not super hard-rocking but it sets up the final chorus in amazing style and is just fantastically beautiful.

2nd Solo in Comfort Comes - the heavy distorted bit. Just the tone he gets with the bends...

...Wow.

Tough choice so I've got to go for my fave Tolerate!

I think it's the ending solo of Motorcycle Emptiness (as in original GT ALBUM version, NOT any truncated radio edit or alternate live performance) for me (philosphical debating point: is it (part of) a 'solo' when there are still vocals as it starts?! I say it is.). But it's a very difficult choice, there are quite a few I love, and so many different ways of even choosing.

proevpete, I like very much how you framed the question, that it doesn't have to be about a technical understanding of guitar playing at all, it can just be about how listenable it is, how much you enjoy it.

Mmm... If we consider ME part as a solo, I'd change my vote.

oh yes, this too for me, feel a bit daft forgetting that one! really, really stands out on the US / Canadian Holy Bible mix, hits you like a euphoric rush of relief and release, especially when contrast to the rest of the album.

The end solo for ME for me is just amazing, but is trumped by the live versions of Milton Keynes and a BBC live session (both 1993) which I can listen to again and again.

It's one of the few disappointments for me with MSP live, when James doesn't play the full outro and just does some riffs instead. Likewise on Tolerate - when he did a solo outro at the Blackwood (?) gig it took it onto another level.

ME came on yesterday when listening to my music on shuffle. I just love it and reckon I've listened to it at least once a week for 20 odd years.....

• Found That Soul
• The Love of Richard Nixon
• Locust Valley
• Intravenous Agnostic

My God, such a hard decision! When I thought of all the solos you had mentioned here I reminded myself of how awesome they all are. Archives of pain is simply brilliant, The Everlasting, Sleepflower, Donkeys, ME and all the others. Faster is a masterpiece. I would add:

- the mesmerizing Ain't going down
- the virtuoso Love's sweet exile
- the short but very effective outro to Condemned to rock 'n' roll

and somehow summarizing all the best melodic and technical elements in one with vigour, clarity and precision:

1. utter perfection to my ears La Tristesse

It's a toss-up between This is Yesterday and Locust Valley... but I think... This Is Yesterday gets it. It's a solo loaded with emotion, and anyone who can load a guitar solo with emotion deserves a bloody big cigar.
