Not a guilty pleasure per se, but for the last five or six years whenever they've played Design for Life live I've turned my back on the band (I'm normally fairly near the front) and looked out at the audience, getting much the same view the band must get. With the scene of euphoria that you see you realise why the band keep on going.

I find it really surprising that people get this negative reaction to telling people they're a Manics fan. The worst reaction I've ever had is either indifference or just not having heard of the band. Frequently I'll get 'oh yeah, they're great!' But then I can be a bit socially oblivious, maybe these people are actually mocking me behind my back

Me, I get reactions like "never heard of it" or "could you say this again, please"?

Songs I love and wish to hear live: So Dead, I'm Not Working, the last three tracks of GATS, His Last Painting, A full band version of Baby Elian, I Think I've Found It.
Almost every time a new album comes out I stupid hold off buying the vinyl until I can get it cheaper. Most of the time it ends up going up in price. Since they started doing the 2 disc versions this has extended to the single disc version as well. Which has been more successful. I have no idea when any of the band members birthdays are, what their wives names are etc... This sort of information seems to be essential for any dedicated fan however I've never really had any interest in knowing. I love the Postcard From A Young Man shoebox thing. Mainly because it houses most of my collection from that era. By putting the form insert inside the empty cardboard padding I have extra space to make it in to a Super Deluxe boxset including all the singles (CD and 7"), 2 disc book, promo CDs, postcards and badges from tour etc... I have to admit In the past few years I haven't been reading as many new articles or listening to as many radio interviews as I used to. Mainly because of lack of time but also because the a lot of info is just repeated. |

I know it is an unpopular album with many on here, so mine has to be that I still listen quite regularly to the Postcards album.
The Descent is one of my least favourite Manics tracks and I'm not keen on the title track, but I do like the rest of the album, even if it is a bit too overproduced in places. I know it was meant to be "one last shot at mass communication", but there are just a few too many strings and gospel choirs on some of the songs. Broken Up Again, Red Rubber, Evidence Against Myself, Distractions, Midnight Sun and Time Ain't Nothing are some of my favourite B sides as well. |

For the first time ever, I've actually lost interest in the band. Resistance has a couple of great singles but is otherwise desperately poor. Not remotely interested in seeing the This Is My Truth tour. I think I need them to make another terrific album to get me back on board.

From an artistic perspective, I think losing Richey was the best thing that happened to them, for me at least. Almost everything I like about the band seems to be from the post-Richey years, and most of the imagery - and a lot of the music - around the Richey era doesn't appeal to me on any level. I think they became a much more interesting band after he left.
And although I should be evident, I'll confirm that obviously it was a horrible thing for everyone involved and I am in no way happy that the band lost such a close friend. But for me to become a fan, I think they had to go in the direction they did without him. I don't like Sleepflower, You Love Us or Motown Junk. I prefer Repeat (Stars & Stripes) to Repeat (UK). |

I love Gold Against the Soul. I love it more than the Holy Bible. I'm not even sorry.

I long for the band to return to ending gigs with ADFL followed by You Love Us (just like circa 1996-7). It's just a great way to end a gig for me (although ADFL is a great set-closer too).
