I'm on my first listen now. Been waiting for official release so only heard the four "singles" until now. International Blue sounds even more fucking massive within the context of the album in my opinion. I mean I caned it relentlessly when it dropped, still not bored of it now. It's simply an epic Manics song.

Liverpool Revisited, again, on repeat as soon as it dropped, still love it. As for the others, on first listen, the chorus of Vivian is PAINFULLY bad. Not even cheesy in a "cute" way, just bad, bad, bad.

So far, out of the ones I hadn't heard before today, Broken Algorithms is winning for me. They couldn't have come up with something more appropriate and perfect for a Guns N' Roses support slot if they tried!

I've already taken Vivian off my tracklisting, I like the verses but just can't listen to that chorus.

The sequence of 6-11 is the best in pretty much any album. These are great songs.
This is a pretty fucking good album.

Vivian’s chorus is basically Turning Japanese. Anyone who doesn’t like the chorus to Turning Japanese is a lost cause.

I really think so.

There was a CD included in all 3 versions of the vinyl I received.

The Demo version of Distant Colours would have made for a better closer to the album. It's a subtle and tender song which is destroyed by the pompous over production on the album.

I know some of you have had the album for a bit now on account of an Administrative Error™ but I’m coming to it fresh today.

Any band into their 3rd decade shouldn’t rightfully be producing albums this good. After the last decade I’d all but given up on the band ever doing more than a couple of songs that I add to my big ol' Manics playlist. But this is an album. A proper album. There are wonderful bits of nostalgia, heaps of influences both old and new, some of Jimmy best guitar in years and a Wire song that isn't utterly shite.

Of course, there are still lots of things I'd probably whinge about (this is a Manics album after all.) But as a whole it’s an album that feels like microcosm of their history. Frustrating in patches, but ultimately charming, honest and full of life. I’ll post more about the specific bits later on - but for now I think it's a simple thumbs up from me. Best record since Journal for sure.

PS: MOAR COWBELL!

The first half is a set of string-laden, major-key pop songs with big, polished production. It definitely starts in a very similar mode. Obviously the second half is different and a lot stronger.

People Give In, International Blue, Sequels of Forgotten Wars, Hold Me Like a Heaven, In Eternity, A Song for the Sadness and The Left Behind all struck me as memorable in production and/or songwriting, which is far more than I was expecting after the singles, so I'm pleasantly surprised. I very much doubt this will ever be a top-tier album for me, but I'm glad it's not just one I've got purely to complete the collection like PFAYM and SATT.

Seeing Nick Nasmyth's name in the credits again made me smile.

It's a small thing, but I miss the more interesting artwork of the band's middle era. I always loved the density of content in THB's art, the EMG fold-out booklet with all the body parts and lyrics in boxes, the more expansive imagery and polaroids in TIMTTMY, the mess of KYE, gloss of Lifeblood, but recently it's just been album cover + a couple of band photos and lyrics.

Sadly I have only the 'Book' CDs, the jewel case CD and one CD in a sleeve which came with the black vinyl!

There's nothing for it, you'll simply have to buy another copy.

In all seriousness that's a bit poor really.

My error, a whole 8 copies of the album confirmed after looking again

Copies 9&10 (white vinyl + accompanying CD) on the way.

I need to stop enabling this.
