What does the title mean?

'Postcards from a young man' where did they get it from and what does it mean?

"It's an imaginary postcard sent to me from Richey,", says Nicky Wire, the band's bassist and current lyricist, "the album is an imagination of what that postcard might say. This is the first time in our history that we've written songs about Richey and it seemed a fitting title."

I dunno, I've got it into my head that it's all a bit early 20th century wartime stuff. I've seen postcards sent to my great gran from her husband during WWI, and from my Uncle Sam to his wife during WWII, and that's the line that my imagination is going down. I've probably been influenced by the working title though.

Perhaps a nod to Samuel Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape, which is about an old guy listening to recordings of himself he made decades before. I believe it's the source of the "Perhaps my best years are gone" quote on the FD sleevenotes.

I thought about that too. Maybe Nicky wrote some of the lyrics from the point of view of his younger self. He might have tried to imagine how he would have reacted if he was a young man in this present society.

"The Penny Black"

It would go well with The Great Western.
