even better - one year, i think in the late 80s or early 90s, she did not release one record and didn't make a single live appearance, yet was crowned "best female vocalist".

My exact first thought.

I for one couldn't give a flying fuck how many Brit Awards Tinie Tempah wins this year. Or any other year.

There are far better awards ceremonies too.

They got their Brits at the time it mattered. When alot of us were just getting into them and they were at the peak of their popularity commercial-wise. I don't think they care about getting another one now.

that was early 90s when mainstream music was very bleak and the poor little record company execs didnt have anyone to vote for

The early Brit awards were started by the Britannia Music Club, This was a mail order CD company. You used to join and get 5 CD's free as long as you brought 4 throught the year, they used to send you a mag every month with offers and new releases. It was very expensive though, I can remember paying £12 for the latest CD about 15 years back. Obviously once the internet took over and Play.com and Amazon started it was the finish of Britannia. I don't know who run or sponsor it now.

I remember nicking my brothers Britannia Music Club catalogue thing and reading up on their bit about the Manics. That's what sparked my interest in wanting to find out about their other albums because they were all listed in it.

That sounds like North America's Columbia House. I don't think it exists any more. Same type of deal. You get a few CDs free and then you had to buy X amount over a year. Never bothered.

you sure? I thought it was the British Phonographic Industry BPI awards? Or am i thinking of something completely different? Unless they merged and became the Brits then?

I think it was what you said first but then merged with Britannia when it started to be on telly.
