Had a listen to it recently and discovered all sorts of things I'd forgotten about the album like the xylophone in "An English Gentleman".
I was going to make a TGW10 thread. But not the right time yet.
They've made better albums than James did on his own with TGW.
But TGW at times makes better music than the band.
But despite the post above, I still didn't listen to the album since today.
We could make the thread "2016 is 'The Great Western' solo album by James is 10 years old! Worship it here! Now!" business nearer the time.
But try and listen to it before Christmas. Even though it doesn't remind me of Christmas in the slightest with remembering how it was bright at that time of purchase.

I liked the B-sides better than most of the songs that made the album.

I prefered IKTZ to be honest. TGW did have some great moments though.

TGW and its b-sides are on my mobile (as is IKTZ and its b-sides plus every other Manics song). Every now and again a track from it will come on and they're always a real delight. TGW has a lovely, declarative world-weariness to it whilst being artfully simple - epitomised in Emigre, Don't Look Back and Kodachrome Ghosts for me.

2006 really isn't that long ago, btw.

It'd be nice if they put out a 10-year anniversary version with all the B-sides, demos, acoustic versions, live versions, etc.

I'm listening to Bad Boys and Painkillers right now and it sounds better than ever.

This isn't a good or bad thing, but I was always surprised that he didn't show off much, if any, of his amazing guitar talents on this solo album. If I recall correctly, there's only one or two guitar solos on the album, and they're not exactly show-off material. Obviously he's trying to serve the songs, but still, I just assumed he'd throw in some hot licks or something.

I've always wondered what sort of Manics album we would have got if JDB had used the music he wrote for TGW and Nicky had used the lyrics and bass from IKTZ.

Does anyone still do mash-ups?

Didn't their albums onwards have songs written by individual members (Still credited to the three) instead of songs worked together like they usually made?
From PFAYM on.
"Everything Fades" would have sounded amazing with James singing.

Since release in 2006 this has been my constant summer album. It reminds me of walking to work between 6.30am - 7am on a summer morning. Great times that summer between May - September 2006.
