Just looking at James’ Gretsch at a few of this year’s festivals.
Has anyone noticed that it looks like the f-holes aren’t real? They look like they’re painted onto the guitar or been filled in. Take a look at the different finishes on the paint - one glossy and the other matte. Or is the 6120 meant to be like that? |

Yeah, that is how they're meant to be on those. It was a thing on some guitars, helps reduce feedback a little. I didn't even notice until recently myself!
The Gibson BB King Lucille guitars also didn't have F-holes, although those didn't even paint any on! It's also odd how he brought that guitar out on tour, yet didn't use it for International Blue or YLAINE, both were tracks he recorded with it (I think he did YLAINE on it during the 2007 arena tour, though)

Some of them actually have the holes cut out though, certainly the ones I’ve seen and played in real life. I’ve played other brands where they’ve been filled in but not a Gretsch.
Been a strange tour guitar wise. You can’t second guess JDB with some of the things he records on and then plays live. The PRS Vela is grim though. |

YLA on the Gretsch was nearer the PFAYM-era I think. Edit: he played an Explorer once or twice too in 2007. Famously on Freedom of Speech when it died on him. |

It was 11 years ago, but from what I remember of the arena tour just before christmas that year (as opposed to the summer tour of smaller venues), the Gretsch was used for YLAINE and 1985.
The Gretsch was used on the 2010 PFAYM tour for Golden Platitudes, I think. Definitely was on the Newport gig. EMG in Swansea was another one I saw where the Gretsch was out on tour, but not used for every song he originally recorded with it (The title track and Enola/Alone used it, but not YLAINE). It is a bit random what he plays though -like the Fret-King had no specific songs it was used for either. It felt like his go-to whenever he didn't want to be playing the LP for whatever reason (Maybe it was lighter - Les Pauls are heavy buggers after-all, and James' 1990 custom would have been WELL before they weight-relieved Gibsons!)

Vaguely, vaguely remember now you mention it. It’s often difficult to remember what he plays and when with his ridiculous collection.
Just remember he played a goldtop LP for FDTW in Southampton in 2010 - never seen before or ever again The Fret King is massively comfortable and very versatile. I bought one during Futurology and can see why he uses it so often. They’re great. I was also watching Haldern 2006 last night where he has problems on Which Way To Kyffin. I’d had a few beers but I think he was playing a Tokai. I always assumed it was a Gibson Custom but the detail in the headstock doesn’t look quite right. Might watch it again. |

Enjoyed the Guitarist interview.
Just for fun, how much do you think his guitar collection must be worth? £250k? |

Better late than never:
https://www.musicradar.com/news/mani...-like-a-gibson Also, about the Gretsch - I saw Ride last week, and Mark Gardner was playing the same model Gretsch as James whenever he was doing regular 6-string guitar, fake F-holes and everything.
