I fucked God up the Ass
Who is responsible for this abomination of a lyric? Nicky? Richey?

I always figured it was a drunken challenge to see who could come up with the most offensive lyric possible. No idea who came up with it.

Wasn't it a quote from American Psycho? Not got a copy to hand.
Fantastic guitar solo at the end. That makes the song. |

Ultimate Manics sixth-form type song really. Pretty awful overall. The melody for the "I feel so small in the supermarket queue" line is quite nice though.

This song was premiered when Nick wished AIDS and death in Michael Stipe so I think it's probably a safe bet to pin the blame there. Still doesn't scratch the depths of Muses later day lyrics:
Your blood is blue and your mind's turned green And your belly is all yellow You believe your throne is too high to be overthrown We'll watch it get razed By a defector

I like the song, but that line does ruin it for me sadly, really wish it wasn't in there.

Was the sound of my breaking off point with that band. Congratulations if you managed to listen on to Muse in the 2010's. I know the Manics get slagged here. But they've never come anywhere close to a lyric like that. Yes, I will take an album full of fucking God up the ass than a single track as described at the start of this post. |

I'm interested to know what exactly do people think is wrong with that particular line? Personally I don't have a problem with it.

I think it makes the song. I only revisiit this song for that line.

In terms of an author I always assumed it was an early example of a Richey 'in character' song (which he moved more and more into by the time of THB/JFPL) but there is a fair chance that Nicky added some lines. Thinking about it it starts in the third person doesn't it ? ('he's a real cool guy') so perhaps it is more of a collaboration. Either that ,or its mirroring the way the book plays with identity reality and narration (from memory does it move to third person at the end ? Studied it for uni but that was a long time ago now!). Part of me thinks it's a shame they wimped out of getting the choir to sing along to this line but a bigger part of me agrees with that decision! Last edited by Glyn; 02-08-2021 at 15:18. |
