It's about a smoking habit:

'We smile at this ugly world… ' - with nicotine-stained yellow teeth.
'So long my fatal friend… I don't need this.' - (self explanatory)
'deceived by the rest, we still have to run' - deceived by cigarette companies, still have to run to improve the health of your lungs.
'The sky so clear, the different view' - ...without smoke.
'I re-imagine the steps you took' - the actions of the tobacco industry to induce young people to smoke.
'Still blinded by your intellect' - both a sarcastic statement about the stupidity of smoking and also the fact it can increase the chances of macular degeneration in smokers.

(mostly joking )

From an earlier post of mine:-

Walk Me To The Bridge has inspired me to quit smoking just by singing the tune to the following lyrics...

Dragging slowly to the tip
With no air left that I can breath
We smoke to forget this ugly world
It never really benefited you

Old ends leave burn marks
Makes you shut down all your lung functions
Spend more money
And need the air
Stinking like an tramp lying on the floor
Stinking like an tramp lying on the floor

So long my fatal friend
I don't need this

The smell so clear
The different view
I always smoke unless it's regal
Embassy or malboro?
Golden Virginia by the bed?
i still cannot run

The urges never end
The nausea starts
Regal gives no street cred
Light up by the bridge
Had me coughing
Coughing out loud at the indie disco
Coughing out loud at the indie disco

So long my fatal friend
I need this to end
I re-imagine the drags i took
Still coughing by the office desk
Light up by the bridge
Light up by the bridge
So long my faithful friend
I don't need this

Light up by the fridge
Light up by the fridge

So long my fatal friend
I need this to end
I re-imagine the drags i took
Still coughing by the office desk
Walk me to the bridge
Walk me to the bridge
So long my fatal friend
I don't need this

Yeah, was bored.

Ha… possibly I read your original post and sub-consiously plagiarised you, sorry if so!

Still, looking forward to the live version!
I quite like that they're doing it this way. The song's already been leaked/played/downloadable for ages already anyway. This is just offering the fans something different.

I'm glad that we'll at least be getting some b-sides, another chance for me to build my own version of a Manics album.

I agree with releasing a live version of the track rather than album version. What's the point in paying again for a track you'll end up owning on the album anyway?

Very true. When the b-sides are all digital tracks and you can buy the 'single'/album track a la carte, it doesn't really make much difference.

Well, in a way, everything charts… but if you mean Top 40 I am very doubtful! Which is a shame in a way, because it's a great single, IMHO. But singles chart these days, meh, *shrugs*.

if people are so concerned about the band still being represented within Ye Olde Hit Parade, from July onwards, why not just stream the track on loop?

I doubt it, but without wanting to sound miserable and pretentious, the singles chart just now is a load of shite anyway. I listened to some of the chart show in the car yesterday and I could have tore my hair out from boredom. I'd be really pleasantly surprised to see this squeezed in among the endless dancey/R&B songs that all sound the same (some of them better than others but it's all sooooo samey), but I don't see it happening.

I think the girl in the video has too many clothes on for it to turn up on tv as well...

they're going to have controls on people doing that. Not sure how but repeat playing a song all day isn't going to count. 100 plays will count as one download though you only have to play a minimum of 30 seconds of a song

"In a sense, it's a lot fairer, because the chart becomes a measurement of the genuine excitement around certain songs, and how that changes over time even after people have started to listen privately."
Sounds like another way for the massive One Direction and Justin Bieber online armies to dominate to me.

*Goes off to listen to Miley Cyrus on Spotify*
