Duchess and Tolerate

Really dont sound similar at all, any similarity is very very tenuous, I'm genuinely surprised that anything was ever made of it. What do other people think?

I'd like to hear Duchess and it's supposed similarities to Tolerate but I haven't got round to tracking it down to listen to yet. I remeber someone on Teletext saying the refrain to Tolerate was similar to Duchess. Dunno if that's true. The Manics have always said they don't own any Stranglers records so it's not as if it would be a blatant copy anyway.

i think the 'ah's towards the end are similar and like counterlanguage said, I think you could successfully sing Tolerate over the top- especially if you slowed 'Duchess' down. At the time I remember thinking 'Nah sounds nothing like it' but I can kinda hear it now.

I thought that they were quite similar, if done in completely different ways. It's not a straight rip-off but possibly influenced. It us a song that the Manics would likely have heard. I think that a lawsuit would have been a bit of a stretch though.

I could hear a vague resemblance, but nothing worth being so smug about like the strangler was at the time of ...Tolerate...'s release, as I recall.

Manic Preacher Stranglers would have been an interesting name for a band though.

No.

As an aside: The Stranglers are the shittest band ever to walk the earth. Tuneless is not the word, I'd rather listen to Keane.

FIRST SFA AND NOW THE STRANGLERS !

Nah, but seriously, they have some good singles and some absolutely atrocious ones. I can understand your hatred better this time round .

To answer the original post, I think there's a very small similarity in the backing vocals of the chorus of "Duchess" and the chorus of "Tolerate" but that's all I can hear...

It's so blatant. You people are deaf.

It's nothing like it at all.

The coldplay/satriani for example had the same melody, chord progression and tempo. this has...nothing.
