There's a fundamental difference between what could be considered plagiarism and appropriation.

Morrissey is a great example of a lyricist who re-appropriated lyrics from sources such as 'A Taste Of Honey' and Victoria Wood ('Rusholme Ruffians'), to tremendous effect. I believe the Manics carried on in this tradition. But yes, Marylyn Manson/Courtney Love quoting will always result in crapness, even with a nice tune underneath.

The chord sequence in Tolerate is supposed to resemble an old Stranglers track called duchess but apparently it's entirely coincidental. When the similarity was brought to their attention, the Manics (well I'm assuming James and Sean are the relevant ones ) said they had never heard the track.
For me, the strings on TGWWTBG sound naggingly familiar, but I can't place what they resemble...
