There's a fundamental difference between what could be considered plagiarism and appropriation.

Morrissey is a great example of a lyricist who re-appropriated lyrics from sources such as 'A Taste Of Honey' and Victoria Wood ('Rusholme Ruffians'), to tremendous effect. I believe the Manics carried on in this tradition. But yes, Marylyn Manson/Courtney Love quoting will always result in crapness, even with a nice tune underneath.
