I think I've taken this album for granted. Not given it a play for ages but all this talk of taking tracks off has inspired me to put it on!
Maybe "The Everlasting" should have been the ending? It's much better with the opening guitar riff than the single edit hacked off. (Why release a single if you have to cut bits out?) I'm falling back in love with this track, but can understand how James playing it acoustic might have pissed some off on here.

I still like Be Natural and I'm Not Working. There's some sounds on there that show one time James was prepared to push the guitar envelope a bit compared to the conservative distortions of the future. (Is it too late to start a "James Is Dead" rumour?)

And why does "The whole World is full of refugees/There just like you just like me" lyric get so much stick when "My Little Empire/Has risen and it's set/My little empire/is as good as it can get" escapes scorn?

You can replace "You Stole The Sun" with "Montana/Autumn/'78" though!

So if the Manics have convinced themselves they come in two flavours, is this album the elusive third? It doesn't sound like the first three, it's slower than EMG and it doesn't sound like anything they've done in the 2000's?
But can they only do this once?

Still a shitter we didn't get a 10th anniversary edition though. Fucking Sony...

I did my usual 'new Manics album' ritual: lockdoors-closecurtains-unplugphone-putonalbum-sitinfrontofspeakers-devoursleevenotes... though come to think of it that was probably the first time I did that properly Afterwards I phoned a friend and we had a lengthy chat about the album, which I seem to remember involved a lengthy debate about whether 'The Everlasting' was about the Miners' strikes and the disintegration of Welsh industry or the Manics' own loss of identity and disillusionment following the success of EMG (turns out we were both right), and a fairly lengthy argument about whether 'You Stole The Sun From My Heart' was really really good (he thought so) or a total piece of shit (I thought so...though I changed my mind a few years later).

Regards,
Marwood.

Highlights for me with this album will always be 'Ready for Drowning', 'My Little Empire', 'Born A Girl' and 'Nobody Loved You'. I love the two different music styles they have in this album - they have the synth of songs like 'I'm Not Working' and then they have the more guitar based 'Ready For Drowning'.

I'm Not Working, Be Natural and SYMM should not be replaced with anything. They are fabulous songs in my opinion. I still listen to this album a lot and would not change a single thing about it. Big thumbs up from me

Truth is the album that made me a fan so it will always have a special place in my heart! I've never agreed with the comments that it gets weak towards the end.

I had never been a huge fan of Truth in the beginning, but I listened to it a few weeks ago and I realized how fucking immense the album is. Top 3 Manics album.

When I first had the album I loved it to death, it was one of my first experiences of musical melancholy and for that reason alone it'll always be special to me. But, listening with older ears it's clear that there are some duff tracks - I'm Not Working and Be Natural being obvious ones.

I'm still not a huge fan of Black Dog on My Shoulder, but I love all other tracks. Including the highly underrated SYMM.

Black Dog could've been the theme to a film.
