Chart sales on today, charts are announced on Friday's nowadays, so it's gonna be a tense next four days but I sadly can't see the Manics holding out for No.1 as has happened so many times n recent years
1 Manic Street Preachers - Resistance Is Futile (18.2k)
2 Motion Picture Cast Recording - The Greatest Showman (14.0k)
3 Kylie Minogue - Golden (6.9k)

Can't even go into the shops and hide the competition at the back of the shelves anymore! No fun!

Haha, you say this, but I popped into HMV in Harrogate today and moved the album over several other albums to amuse myself It does nothing, but I try to help the band.

Well, if they hang on by 1 or 2 sales... it was all down to you!

Same. I must have played it an insane amount of times since November, but I still love it. One of their all time great singles.

The nice thing about International Blue (and Distant Colours, and Dylan and Caitlin) is that they're singles you can be proud of, rather than shuffling uncomfortably when say 'Your Love Alone' or 'It's Not War' or 'Let Robeson Sing' or "Indian summer" come on the radio...

Totally agree - International Blue is such a classic bit of Manics and a really inspired song for a band working on their 13th album. Having listened to the record a few times now front to back, one thing that has surprised me is that I *really* enjoy The Left Behind, which wasn't a track that I seemed destined to appreciate based on album reviews and my feelings about other Nicky-led tracks. I don't dislike all of them (I really love Williams Last Words and Holy As the Soil), but the ones I rlike tend to have some great JDB vocal moments as well, which TLB doesn't have.

I'd say the worst track for me is A Song for the Sadness - it's pretty derivative of In Eternity and doesn't really do anything for me. A few other songs are simply average, but in general, I like the record a lot. Sequels of Forgotten Wars roars in a way that is pretty notable for a band this far into their career. But International Blue is by far the best track and will go down as one of the great Manics singles of all time...but hopefully not their LAST great single!

Also, Distant Colours works much better for me on the record than it does as a single. People Give in is a great opener that is reminiscent of Solitude Sometimes Is. And Hold Me Like a Heaven is a major grower.

Heard a rumor the Manics will be coming to US shores in November - hope that happens! It'd be great to see them cranking out IB live.

So, a few days with the album so far and it's growing on me, but it does somewhat match my fears too. It's all a bit overproduced, overpolished and just kind of... there. It's clearly in the SATT/PFAYM lineage and it's just not the side of Manics that excites me. The album seems to want to hit a lot of big emotions but the direction they've gone for muffles it all.

Random thoughts:

"Hold Me Like a Heaven" is by and far the best song on the album - the part where the album's stylistic and production leanings click together. I also find myself really liking "The Left Behind". It actually sounds like it has the heart the rest of the album strives to have but doesn't quite get there.

The biggest crime is that the "aah-aah" bit of "Liverpool Revisited" is the greatest moment on the entire album but the rest of the song is so wishy-washy and clunky.

The demo disc isn't particularly revelationary this time but "Distant Colours" works really well acoustically.

"Broken Algorithms" is by and far the low point of the album.

I'm sure the album will grow on me - I do find myself wanting to return to it if only to help make up my mixed mind on it - but there's very little here so far that seems like actual essential Manics moments and a lack of anything that brings something new to their discography.

The trouble with the demo discs is that since PFAYM (or JFPL) they've been so conscious of themselves - a demo should be like the No Surface All Feeling acoustic on EMG10, not something that's 4 minutes long with drums, cello and background vocals! Those things just end up sounding like rubbish remixes. I want to hear the nucleus of the song.

Fully agree. A lot like Golden Platitudes was the only song to truly click on PFAYM. The album has some other good moments but for me it's the only song that sounds like a real progression from Futurology and shows that can still break some new ground when needed.

Interesting to hear on the track by track that it is very recent and the last song completed for the album. That blows my theory that it is from the same time as Together Stronger. Guess the backing vocals were just reused from that song rather than worked on together.

They save those for the cassette editions unfortunately...

I just listened to the album for the first time on CD (and LOUD) after listening to it online via Amazon rip as my CD got delivered to my patent's house. Anyway, the sound is AWESOME, the songs just sound so much better than the Youtube videos and the Amazon MP3s, it's so awesome and Christ, Hold Me Like A Heaven is just blood brilliant, I must have played this song like 50 times already!!!

I've found the previous demo discs quite interesting in that regard: you had the occasional totally complete song with slightly rougher production, but otherwise they've been a good mix of intimate skeletons, suitably alternative versions (the JFPL bonus disc was really fascinating in that regard), Nicky's solo takes on his own songs, etc. This time it just sounds like a slightly rougher version of the finished album with a couple of exceptions (which still sound so polished they could just be alternate recordings).
