'There By The Grace Of God' - show it some love?
It's the band's least favourite single of theirs. Before the 02 gig it hadn't been played in 9 years and has quickly disappeared from the set-lists again. It set the template for 'Lifeblood' and 'The Love Of Richard Nixon', which heavily divide fans but the latter of which was placed by the band in their top 10 singles in the same list that placed 'TBTGOG' last. They now say they wished they'd never released it as a single at all, and had released '4 Ever Delayed' instead.
But I've always loved 'There By The Grace Of God', from the first listen. I love the way that it should be cold but its restraint gives it a strange warmth. It's electronic and based on machine beats and synthetic sounds, but somehow still manages to sound human. Wire is fond of the word 'elegiac' but in truth no song in their canon deserves the word more. Listening to it, as I have just done, reminds me of something I once read in a review of a 2002 live show - that it's not something you listen to, it's something done to you (quoted from memory, but that's the gist). And to disagree with the band further, it's a much better single than '4ED' would have been - the latter is a decent song, and could happily have been a one-off 2003 single, but it's basically a decent mid-tempo rock song with some keyboards over the top. 'TBTGOG' is something else entirely, something much stranger (in the context of the Manics) and more beautiful. So, it's time to show it some love, I think. Anyone agree?

Well I think the black woman who sits down in the video is really cute.
And I do love the tone of the guitar riff. Very good build up to a release in the chorus. Just could of done with a bit more variation in the lyrics, but then that's 2000 Manics for you. Just think if "4Ever Delayed" had been chosen for their single, then this would have been a thread called "Why was 'There By The Grace Of God' relegated to a b-side?" No! I don't want to get sucked into alternate universe Manics releases at this time of night! I actually want to get some sleep tonight!

Back in the time when this single was released, it really felt like a good-bye release and maybe this is why the Manics don't like it.
Anyway I agree it's a good song.

Iv always really liked it. Much better than TLORN for me. Its got a really haunting vibe.

Really like it from the first listen too. There were many worse single options than this.

Their like/dislike for different songs often seems perplexing, I think it often seems to be about things perhaps not directly related to the music, like sales, or the way it was reviewed or the time it was released, or what casual fans think which is a shame.
